FAQs

Frequently asked questions about i-to-i

Who can volunteer with i-to-i?
Anybody between the age of 18-80, regardless of background, nationality or qualifications. English-teaching volunteers, however, must be native or near-native speakers of the language.

Are there any restrictions at all?
You must be eligible to enter the country that your volunteer project is based in on a tourist visa or its equivalent. If you are not eligible for these, you shouldn’t apply.

What do I do on an i-to-i volunteer project?
You can help locally-run, long-term projects based largely in developing countries.

Can I travel and volunteer with a partner?
Yes. Couples and friends are welcome. You must book early though, so we can arrange joint projects and accommodation (where possible). Contact your nearest i-to-i office for availability. If a project is full, we can arrange suitable alternatives.

How do I get a visa?
We will give you directions for obtaining your visa, but you will need to apply and pay for it yourself. We will provide the embassy contact details, visa application form and invitation letter from the country itself (if required). Our In Country Co-ordinator will also help arrange an extension to your visa whilst volunteering with i-to-i, if required.

When are the projects available?
Most of our projects have arrival dates throughout the year but it is important that you check availability.

Do I need to learn a language before I travel?
On some placements it is vital you know the local language. On others it is preferable. And on many you will be fine with English.

How late can I apply?
The minimum booking deadline is four weeks. We usually recommend six months and more on particularly popular projects. Some conservation and media projects, for example, fill up a year in advance. The longer you leave, the more time you have to plan, arrange inoculations and get fundraising - with expert advice from i-to-i all the way.

Where do I book?
Either click here >> to see all i-to-i placements and book online, or call i-to-i on 0845 344 7592.

How does the application process work?
Once you have had a look at our placements we advise you call a Work and Travel Advisor on 0845 344 7592 to get expert advice on projects and availability and discuss your travel plans.

A deposit of £195 then secures your place on the project. The total balance is due 12 weeks before your arrival date. If your project requires a CV, you must send this to us immediately - a Work and Travel Advisor can explain the process in detail. You will then be sent a welcome pack and called by your Country Desk Officer for a short telephone interview to ensure your project suits you and that you understand what your volunteering experience will entail. A briefing pack will then be sent out to you and you will be given step-by-step advice as to how to fundraise, obtain visas and inoculations, extend your insurance, book your flights and even what to pack for the trip.
