The instructor's lifestyle is brilliant. You work in the sunshine and have plenty of time to improve your own skills and enjoy your favourite sport. You won't earn a fortune to start with - but if you spend all day on the beach that's no worries. Theres no time to lose, book your place to get qualified and working asap.

You need professional qualifications in beach lifesaving and as a surf instructor - and that's where Flying Fish can help.

After you qualify with Flying Fish in Sydney, we recommend trying for immediate work with a Sydney surf school or NSW surf adventure company. These jobs are seldom advertised but you are well placed to hear about them on the grapevine.

What will I earn

The surf industry is not well structured! There are are no major employers to approach in advance but that need not be a barrier to you getting work. Wherever the surf is good you'll find a surf school. The work appeals to people who are travelling in search of the perfect wave, so job vacancies are frequent. You can expect to earn about AUD 25 an hour in Australia, with a likely maximum of AUD 150 a day.

The next step

After working a season in Australia you’ll want to spread your wings. There's no surf in the Mediterranean but Portugal, Spain and SW France have great surf on their Atlantic coasts.
