Consumer media 2002

2000-2001 was where all the mas media started for Tom Griffiths and as a result the gap year industry. They were exceptionally busy years for Tom as gapyear.com released the first ever 'Gap Year Reports' that gave the media an insight as to how there was actually a thriving gap year market that they didn't know about and the impact is was having on the education system (increasing deferrals), the development of young people and the emerging youth travel industry. Armed with hard facts Tom was able to open dialogue with the Editors and Producers to help them create some of the first major gap year pieces and supplements ever seen.

Following the .com boom, where sites like gapyear.com found themselves at the forefront of the changing nature of how young people accessed information and met others online, the Childers Hostel fire, the Kirsty Jones backpacker murder and 9/11 occurred. More and more young people were able to access travel advice and information online, yet the world of travel was being turned upside-down. The media went to town. It is fair to say that this was the period where Tom learned his media trade, facing up to tough quesuitons about the safety of young backpackers overseas.
