This placement would suit... Responsible people with an interest in drama and/or music, who are looking for a cultural adventure.

Music and Drama have always played an essential role in the development of children’s learning. They enable children to become free-thinking and creative, and they encourage the imagination.

Music and Drama teaching are not high on the agenda in poorer South African schools, meaning that the children miss out on the opportunities to enjoy and perhaps excel in these subjects. Teaching through music and drama is valuable on many different levels including teaching English, social interaction and increasing confidence and self awareness for the children.

Music and drama are powerful forms of expression and escapism - and a gift of joy for those with a natural inclination towards them. You can share your passion for the arts with children who are brimming with enthusiasm, under the clear blue skies of South Africa. This placement is, quite simply, a delight!

About your placement
Essential Music and Drama is a must for people with a passion! You don’t need any qualifications, just a love of your subject and an enthusiasm to share what you know. Your placement will take place at the Kanysia Education Centre in South Africa. The performing arts talent coming out of this school is remarkable and the school is particularly enthusiastic about developing the arts teaching.

As a volunteer you may be actively involved in the continual development of these subjects. You may also find that you are involved in general assistant teaching too.

Apart from the standard national curriculum taught, Khanyisa also excels in furthering special talents whether these be sport, drama, music, culture, IT etc. All of the educators at the centre are highly passionate about teaching and passing on valuable information and life skills to their learners. The dedication, respect and enthusiasm of these learners can actually be ‘felt’ when walking around the school grounds. The kids are extremely polite, and nice manners and self respect are obviously instilled in them right from day one!

Kanysia School
The school haa a brilliant variety of musical instruments and a healthily stocked music room. From drums to violins, this school is well equipped with the help of a lottery grant funding last year; however there is a distinct lack of qualified music teachers. Volunteers who wish to teach music and who have any personal experience of studying or learning music would be highly appreciated. You do not need to be qualified or have taught before.

Teaching drama
The Drama classes are run in conjunction with the Life Orientation classes. Life Orientation classes were only brought into the curriculum a few years ago. The purpose of these classes is to develop enthusiasm, confidence, self-esteem, communication skills and social skills.

The school
This placement is based in the Limpopo region in the small town or Giyane. Khanyisa school in South Africa was recently allocated a money grant from the lottery to build and improve many facilities for the children of the school and for the use of children from neighbouring schools which are particularly poor. Khanyisa school is now the proud host of much new equipment including a grand sports complex and huge pool. This school also hosts the volunteer essential sports programme and is likely to be sociable and popular all through the year! This is a very special school looking for similar volunteers with compassion and a relaxed personality.

Khanyisa school is a community-minded school set in a particularly beautiful location opposite a nature park.

Accommodation
All volunteers will live together in a house owned by the school which is situated in the residential area of Kremetart, about a 10-minute drive from the school. The house consists of three bedrooms with bunk beds, a bathroom with toilet, a separate shower room, a kitchen and a lounge/diner area with TV. A few of the teachers from the school also live nearby.

In Kremetart there is a basic grocery shop as well as a small local pub with a big screen TV. Other than this, socialising revolves around the many braais - the name for the legendary South African barbeque!

Weekends
Tennis courts, squash courts, large outdoor pool, internet, games and many other facilities are available for use at the school for your pleasure. Not to mention the limitless weekend travel opportunities with the other volunteers!
