Orang-utans are an increasingly endangered species and there are estimated to be fewer than 63,000 orang-utans exist in the world today, and the majority of these call Borneo home. The last 100 years have seen a 90% decrease in the population as illegal pet-trading, poaching and deforestation have taken their toll. This tour gives you the opportunity to see a number of different orang-utan conservation organisations, focusing on education and raising awareness, as well as exploring the wilds of Borneo.
Days 1 - 3:
Start off your wildlife adventure at Matang Wildlife Centre near the Kubah National Park. You will get “back stage" passes to visit the Ape Centre and go on a tour of the centre by senior staff which will teach you all about the Great Orang-utan Project rehabilitation programme.
Once you’ve learned the ropes you’ll spend a day as a member of the team at the rehabilitation centre. ! You will be walked through a day in the life of the orang-utan, sun bear and other animals by rehabilitation officers and actually take part in many of the activities they perform - including the feeding of animals, cleaning of enclosures, enrichment of orang-utan life and general centre maintenance.
Days 4 - 7: Take a boat ride around the impressive mangrove swamps on the South China Sea’s shores before heading to Bako National Park. The park is home to an array of exotic wildlife in natural surroundings, including; the amazing proboscis monkey, langurs, macaques, silver leaf monkeys, boar, deer, civets, binturong and many species of snake. You’ll head through 5 different kinds of rainforest on your trails and take some time out on Damai beach.
Days 7- 9
Transfer back to Kuching and visit the cultural village on the way. This is a ‘living museum’ to the Dayaks (indigenous tribes) of Borneo; all are represented in colourful traditional dress in a realistic representation of how these tribes lived their lives inside a rainforest. There are demonstrations of their crafts, dances and traditions.
Next up it’s a visit the Semenggoh orang-utan rehabilitation centre where you’ll see orang-utan feeding and glimpse orang-utan in the trees above. You will then travel to Batang Ai National Park, in the heart of Borneo, passing through rubber, cocoa and pepper plantations on the way.
Days 9 - 12:
During your stay in the rainforest activities will vary greatly depending on the weather and time of year, and the customs and daily lives of the indigenous tribe. You can expect regular activities to include: treks, reforestation activities, learning traditional crafts and skills, camera trap setting and monitoring, kayaking and sleeping in the jungle!
Days 13- 14: Time to travel back to Kuching with an opportunity to visit Semenggoh rehabilitation centre on the return journey, to see more beautiful orang-utan. After an overnight stay and a chance to relax, it’s time to head home.
