Coach and Compete within Athletics in Perth, Western AustraliaAustralia is one of the top countries for athletics in the world. You'll coach a variety of ages at a top athletic club with excellent facilities. You can also train and compete for the club.
Athletics is a fairly popular sport in Australia but not compared to other sports such as Aussie rules and cricket.
On this project, you'll spend your afternoons and evenings coaching and/or training at an athletics club in Perth.
During the day you'll bring very welcome coaching skills to our refugee project, where you'll coach a variety of sports to refugee children from war-torn countries.
You'll work with a variety of ages at the club and during the weekend you will have an opportunity to compete yourself and test your abilities against the Aussies!
The clubs we work with have a very lively social scene and you'll be welcomed with open arms!
Project Description
As the athletics project will only take up a certain amount of time during the week and will be based during the evenings, in the day time you will be working on the Refugee Sports Project where you'll work for 4-5 hours a day coaching athletics or a number of other sports. This will leave your evenings free to coach and train with the athletics club.
The club where you'll work is conveniently located close to your accommodation. There are many different events available to train and coach at the club. The only events that are not available to train in or coach are the pole vault and walking. The club we work with is consistently ranked in the top 3 clubs in Western Australia and they have a number of Australian athletes at the club.
The club has a variety of ages and as athletics in Western Australia in terms of training groups is based on ability not age the squads are varied in terms of ages. When you are coaching and training you will be working with a variety of ages. You will be working as an assistant coach to the existing coach at the club, this will be a great way to improve your athletic coaching ability. If you are a highly experienced or qualified coach you may have the opportunity to take your own training group.
Coaching and training will generally be for three days a week and once or twice in each field these being: - Track
- Field
- Throwing
Please Note: During the period of April - September you can coach and train but there is limited coaching available as most of it takes part during the regular season.
If you wish to compete you will be charged $66 by the Athletics Association of Western Australia.
Accommodation
Your accommodation is located in the CBD (Central Business District) of Perth, Western Australia. Therefore you are very central, close to the main train station and shopping district.
You'll be accommodated in a centrally located lodge that is friendly and relaxing, making it ideal for long-term stays. You may have your own room or you may share a room with other volunteers. There is an excellent kitchen and storage area for cooking meals and plenty of space to relax.
Entertainment at your accommodation includes a pool table, cheap internet access, arcade machines and cable TV (Foxtel), to name a few. But with all the sunshine Perth has – you’ll be out and about enjoying the many outdoor activities! You are literally a stroll from the Swan River and free CBD transport. Trains and buses are also only a few minutes away to take you to Fremantle, King’s Park or to the many other ‘things to do’! The city centre boasts great shopping, restaurants and pubs or head over to Northbridge for more pubs, nightclubs and multicultural cuisine. You'll get to work via bus, which stops outside your accommodation.
Perth was built on the banks of the magnificent Swan River over 150 years ago and is now a city rich in culture and filled with theatres, art galleries and museums. The city is modern and vibrant - a fun, friendly and 'laid back' place, with clear skies and a sunny climate. Western Australia is locally known as the 'state of excitement!' Some of its more famous attractions include Kings Park, Scarborough Beach, Fremantle and the Swan River. Fremantle (or as the local’s call it, ‘Freo’) is the city’s port and is rich in history. At weekends you will find markets, entertainment and plenty of alfresco style cafes to laze in.
Perth has restaurants to suit all tastes - the most popular cuisine is, of course, the great Australian BBQ. Barbeque facilities are abundant in local parks - take your own food and cook up a feast, Australian style!
For meals in local restaurants, a trip to Perth's inner city centre is well worth the effort - it bustles with activity and offers a range of choices of restaurants.
