Coach juniors at a badminton club and then train and possibly play for one of the club teams.Badminton in Australia is not as popular as cricket and other sports, so this project is about developing the game at the grass roots level to try to encourage more people to take up the sport.
You'll coach the junior players at the badminton club we work with, as well as training and possibly playing with the senior sides at the club.
If you're an experienced or well qualified coach, you may also have the opportunity to coach some of the Western Australia state teams.
As the badminton project only takes place in the evenings and will only take up a limited amount of your time during the week, you'll work on the Refugee Sports Project at a school during the day. This project takes place for 4-5 hours a day, coaching a number of different sports leaving your evenings free to coach and train with your badminton squad.
The Badminton Project
You'll work at a badminton club located fairly close to the city centre of Perth. The club we work with has a number of boys and girls who train at the club and you'll help to coach these youngsters. The club also has quite a few male and female teams and you'll also have the opportunity to coach the team, train with them and possibly play for the team, if you get selected.
The club has a great social scene and they'll welcome you with open arms.
As a badminton coach the junior teams you will be coaching are not divided into age groups as such they are more based on ability. Generally when you are coaching you will be working with all the ability groups giving you a good overall coaching experience.
If you are a qualified or highly experienced badminton coach you may have the opportunity to work with some of Western Australia State badminton teams. Western Australia has a number of State teams:
- Under 17s
- Under 19s
- Senior sides
Please Note: If you wish to play in a tournament there will be a registration fee involved as well as a tournament fee which is usually around $15.
The Badminton season runs all year around apart from school holidays. Tournaments tend to take part at different times of the year and if your project falls during a time when a tournament is scheduled, you'll have the opportunity to play in that tournament.
Coaching and training are held on every Tuesday and Wednesday the times are as follows:
- Junior training: 5 – 6 pm
- Senior training: Tuesday 7 – 9:30pm, Wednesdays 8 – 10 pm
Your accommodation is located in the CBD (Central Business District) of Perth, Western Australia. Therefore you are very central, close to the main train station and shopping district.
You'll be accommodated in a centrally located lodge that is friendly and relaxing, making it ideal for long-term stays. You may have your own room or you may share a room with other volunteers. There is an excellent kitchen and storage area for cooking meals and plenty of space to relax.
Entertainment at your accommodation includes a pool table, cheap internet access, arcade machines and cable TV (Foxtel), to name a few. But with all the sunshine Perth has, you’ll be out and about enjoying the many outdoor activities! You are literally a stroll from the Swan River and free CBD transport. Trains and buses are also only a few minutes away to take you to Fremantle, King’s Park or to the many other ‘things to do’! The city centre boasts great shopping, restaurants and pubs or head over to Northbridge for more pubs, nightclubs and multicultural cuisine. You'll get to work via bus, which stops outside your accommodation.Perth was built on the banks of the magnificent Swan River over 150 years ago and is now a city rich in culture and filled with theatres, art galleries and museums. The city is modern and vibrant - a fun, friendly and 'laid back' place, with clear skies and a sunny climate. Western Australia is locally known as the 'state of excitement!'
Some of its more famous attractions include Kings Park, Scarborough Beach, Fremantle and the Swan River. Fremantle (or as the local’s call it, ‘Freo’) is the city’s port and is rich in history. At weekends you will find markets, entertainment and plenty of alfresco style cafes to laze in.
Perth has restaurants to suit all tastes, but the most popular cuisine is, of course, the great Australian BBQ. Barbeque facilities are abundant in local parks - take your own food and cook up a feast, Australian style!
For meals in local restaurants, a trip to Perth's inner city centre is well worth the effort - it bustles with activity and offers a range of choices of restaurants.
