Overview
The Football Academy is located in a poor area of Rio and was set up by one of Brazil’s best known footballers who grew up there. It is an inspirational place for the young people who go there as well as for the staff and volunteers.
The concept is to give young people the opportunity to grow in confidence through playing football and to give them an escape from difficult living conditions (they have to pass a means test to gain a place there). The children are well disciplined and very grateful for the opportunities offered to them. It’s not just their soccer skills that improve. Evidence shows they do better at school too. The Academy welcomes volunteers who can bring a variety of skills and interpersonal skills. Helping with football is key, but your other skills will be valuable too and a flexible approach will help you get the most out of it.
What will I do?
This will depend partly on your skills but assisting with the football coaching is high on the list. The Academy is keen to offer the children dance, English lessons and computing. Volunteers need to work for at least 4 hours a day several times a week.
Where will I live?
You will live in Ipanema, a lively area with a world famous sandy surfing beach. You will stay in one of Ipanema’s hostels in longer term accommodation. It is basic but very well located for Rio’s attractions and sociable too. The hostel is located around an hour by public transport from the Academy. There are other staff that travel in from the centre who can show you the way when you arrive.
How can I spend my free time?
Rio’s sights need little introduction. Going to the beach is a must as that’s where a lot of Rio life takes place. You will see personal trainers, netball and a lot of surfers. Sugarloaf mountain and mountain treks are worth doing for more athletic. And when you’ve had your fill of beautiful scenery you’ll enjoy the buzz of downtown Rio with its vibrant social and cultural life.
About an hour down the coast is a Surf school set up as a charity for local children. They would welcome some support escorting children to the beach. There are possibilities of combining this more formally with the football project.
