On this project you'll coach the junior teams at a lacrosse club and play for the senior men's or women's teams.

Lacrosse is not as big a sport in Australia as cricket or Aussie Rules, but it is growing because of its excitement and snappy style!

Your brief on this project will be to help develop the game at grass roots levels and assisting in getting more children involved in the sport.

This is a coach, train and play project, which means that you'll spend your afternoons and evenings coaching various junior teams at a lacrosse club.

You'll also train with various adult teams and, if you get selected, you will be able to play in matches over the weekends.

The club we work with have a very lively social scene and you'll be welcomed with open arms!

As the main lacrosse project won't occupy all your time, during the daytime you'll work on the Refugee Sports Project. Here you can coach a number of other sports for around 4-5 hours every day, leaving your evenings free to coach and train with the lacrosse team.

The club where you'll work is conveniently located close to your accommodation. There are many boys' and girls' junior teams that you will coach, and you'll also have the opportunity to coach, train and possibly play for (if you get selected) a number of senior men's and women's teams.

The junior girls and boys teams are as follows:
  • Under 12s, 13s, 15s & 17s (boys)
  • Under 16s (girls)
If you'd also like to play lacrosse while on your project, this can be arranged, and you may also have the opportunity to coach one of the teams, if you're good enough to do so. The senior teams that you can coach, train with and play for are:
  • Men’s: 2 senior teams
  • Women’s: 2 senior teams
The Lacrosse season runs from:
  • March - mid April (preseason for seniors, no coaching available during this time)
  • April - mid September (season)
Coaching and training times are as follows:
  • Juniors: 4:30 – 6:30 - Tuesday & Thursday
  • Women & Men: 6:30 - 8:30 - Tuesday & Thursday
Games take place on Saturdays during the season. The juniors play their games in the mornings and here you'll have the opportunity to coach a team, putting everything you have taught them into practice on the field.

In the afternoons, as a senior player, it will be your opportunity to play.

Travellers WorldwideAccommodation
Your accommodation is located in the CBD (Central Business District) of Perth, Western Australia. Therefore you are very central, close to the main train station and shopping district.

You'll be accommodated in a centrally located lodge that is friendly and relaxing, making it ideal for long-term stays. You may have your own room or you may share a room with other volunteers. There is an excellent kitchen and storage area for cooking meals and plenty of space to relax.

Entertainment at your accommodation includes a pool table, cheap internet access, arcade machines and cable TV (Foxtel), to name a few. But with all the sunshine Perth has, you’ll be out and about enjoying the many outdoor activities! You are literally a stroll from the Swan River and free CBD transport. Trains and buses are also only a few minutes away to take you to Fremantle, King’s Park or to the many other ‘things to do’! The city centre boasts great shopping, restaurants and pubs or head over to Northbridge for more pubs, nightclubs and multicultural cuisine. You'll get to work via bus, which stops outside your accommodation.

Perth was built on the banks of the magnificent Swan River over 150 years ago and is now a city rich in culture and filled with theatres, art galleries and museums. The city is modern and vibrant - a fun, friendly and 'laid back' place, with clear skies and a sunny climate. Western Australia is locally known as the 'state of excitement!'

Some of its more famous attractions include Kings Park, Scarborough Beach, Fremantle and the Swan River. Fremantle (or as the local’s call it, ‘Freo’) is the city’s port and is rich in history. At weekends you will find markets, entertainment and plenty of alfresco style cafes to laze in.

Perth has restaurants to suit all tastes, but the most popular cuisine is, of course, the great Australian BBQ. Barbeque facilities are abundant in local parks - take your own food and cook up a feast, Australian style!

For meals in local restaurants, a trip to Perth's inner city centre is well worth the effort - it bustles with activity and offers a range of choices of restaurants.
