You'll coach the junior boys and girls teams at a rugby league club. You can also train with, and possibly play for, the senior women's or men's teams at the club.

Australia is one of the best countries in the world at rugby league.

It is played more in certain parts of Australia more than in others and in Western Australia, rugby league struggles to compete with other popular sports, such as Aussie Rules.

This is where you can make a difference!

You help is need to coach children and inspire them to take on this thrilling sport. You'll also assist in developing the sport at the grass roots level.

This is a coach, train and play project. In other words, after working with a number of junior teams at the club, you'll also have the opportunity to train with the senior or colts sides. Then, on the weekends, you'll have the opportunity to test your Rugby league skills against the Aussies (if you get selected).

As the main rugby league project won't occupy all your time, during the daytime you'll work on the Refugee Sports Project. Here you can coach rugby league and/or a number of other sports for around 4-5 hours every day, leaving your evenings free to coach and train with the rugby league team.

Rugby league project
As a Travellers rugby league coach, you'll work at a rugby league club which is conveniently located fairly close to your accommodation.

The clubs we work with has excellent facilities and they have a large number of boys and girls junior teams which you will coach. They also have a large number of men's and women's teams as well as colts teams (under 20s). You'll have the opportunity to train with, coach, and possibly play for these teams, if you get selected.

You'll work with a number of junior teams at the clubs, including:
  • Under 7s - Under 13s (boys)
  • Under 15s, 17s & 20s (colts) boys
  • Under 16 (girls)
If you would also like to play rugby league on this project, you'll have the opportunity to with a number of senior teams. There is a good mixture of standards at the clubs so there is something available for everyone. As well as training and playing for one of these teams, you also have the opportunity to coach one if you are good enough. Here are the senior teams that you can train with and play for:
  • 4 Men's teams
  • 2 Colt men's teams (under 20)
  • 2 women's teams
In Western Australia, women are not allowed to play contact rugby league. The WARL (Western Australia Rugby league) has introduced League Tag, a form of rugby league without contact. This move has resulted in a massive influx of women and girls into the sport.

The club you will be working at has a great social scene and they will welcome you with open arms - you will soon be embraced into the Aussie rugby culture.

The rugby league season runs from:
  • The rugby league season: March – September
  • Pre season training: Jan - March (seniors men's only, no coaching of juniors available during this time)
Coaching and training times are as follows:
  • Juniors: 4:30 – 6 - Tuesday and Thursday
  • Women & Men: 6:00 - 7:30/8 - Tuesday and Thursday
Games take place on the weekends during the season. The juniors play there game in the morning where you will have the opportunity to coach a team putting everything you have taught them into practice on the field. In the afternoon as a senior player it will be your opportunity to play.

Travellers WorldwideAccommodation
Your accommodation is located in the CBD (Central Business District) of Perth, Western Australia. Therefore you are very central, close to the main train station and shopping district.

You'll be accommodated in a centrally located lodge that is friendly and relaxing, making it ideal for long-term stays. You may have your own room or you may share a room with other volunteers. There is an excellent kitchen and storage area for cooking meals and plenty of space to relax.

Entertainment at your accommodation includes a pool table, cheap internet access, arcade machines and cable TV (Foxtel), to name a few. But with all the sunshine Perth has, you’ll be out and about enjoying the many outdoor activities! You are literally a stroll from the Swan River and free CBD transport. Trains and buses are also only a few minutes away to take you to Fremantle, King’s Park or to the many other ‘things to do’! The city centre boasts great shopping, restaurants and pubs or head over to Northbridge for more pubs, nightclubs and multicultural cuisine. You'll get to work via bus, which stops outside your accommodation.

Perth was built on the banks of the magnificent Swan River over 150 years ago and is now a city rich in culture and filled with theatres, art galleries and museums. The city is modern and vibrant - a fun, friendly and 'laid back' place, with clear skies and a sunny climate. Western Australia is locally known as the 'state of excitement!'

Some of its more famous attractions include Kings Park, Scarborough Beach, Fremantle and the Swan River. Fremantle (or as the local’s call it, ‘Freo’) is the city’s port and is rich in history. At weekends you will find markets, entertainment and plenty of alfresco style cafes to laze in.

Perth has restaurants to suit all tastes, but the most popular cuisine is, of course, the great Australian BBQ. Barbeque facilities are abundant in local parks - take your own food and cook up a feast, Australian style!

For meals in local restaurants, a trip to Perth's inner city centre is well worth the effort - it bustles with activity and offers a range of choices of restaurants.
