International Volunteer HQ’s partner organization in Ghana requires volunteers NOW! IVHQ has volunteer programs in the coastal city of Accra, in rural villages close to Accra and in small townships throughout Ghana.

What will I do?

Although Ghana is an English speaking country, many school children cannot communicate effectively in the English language. This is a common phenomenon in both rural and urban areas of Ghana, hence the need to recruit and place volunteers in communities where there are simply insufficient teachers (or teacher’s who have inadequate English) to cater for the number of children. The project seeks to stimulate the interest in school children to study and speak proper English whilst at the same time offering our foreign volunteers a unique opportunity to learn and experience the Ghanaian culture. Music, math and arts are also incorporated into our program and volunteers are encouraged to bring resources that can assist with the teaching.

Volunteers are effectively placed in rural and urban communities where they will teach solo and assist the few teachers available. Project is based on the syllabus of the Ghana Education Service and this will be made available to all volunteers after their orientation. NB Volunteers DO NOT need to be a qualified or experienced teacher.

Frankadua EP Primary School
Frankadua EP Primary School located in the relatively small Ghanaian town of Frankadua has over 250 children that attend. Volunteers generally teach between the hours of 7:30am and 2:30pm. Classes vary dependent on volunteer ability and experience but general classes include math, English, science, arts and physical education. In addition to school classes, volunteers can also assist children with their homework and assignment after school and in the evening. NB This is only an example placement which is one of many offered by IVHQ in Ghana and not necessarily the one you will be working at.

Start dates & orientation

Volunteers can begin our Ghana placements on the 1st and 15th of each month.

Orientation will begin on the 1st and 15th (dates) of each month and last for approximately half a day. Orientation will be conducted by staff in Accra and cover everything you need to know for your volunteering placement in Ghana - Introduction to Ghana, Ghanaian Customs, Rules and Expectations, Safety, Basic Twi lesson, Travel Opportunities in Ghana and introduction to your project and placement. The orientation will also give you a chance to meet other volunteers and swap contact details for weekend travel and socializing. Once orientation is complete, volunteers will be transported to their home stay and introduced to all relevant parties – home stay family members and program placement staff.

Accommodation

Volunteers are accommodated in a home stay where they will live with a local family. We give that local family money from your fee for support, food and board. It is exciting to stay with a family; that way you will learn the Ghanaian way of life, meet local people, eat local food, speak the local language and engage in local customs and traditions. Living is comfortable and all home stays and volunteer houses have electricity and running water. Volunteers can expect to share a room with one or two other volunteers but in some home stays volunteers get their own rooms.

Requirements for this project

Volunteers must be 18 years or older at the beginning of the program and have at least a high school education.
