Kenya
We spend time at Sheldricks Elephant Sanctuary in Nairobi, visiting during feeding time, before heading out to the 20 million year old Great Rift Valley amidst lakes and extinct volcanoes on our way to our first campsite.
We first stay by Lake Naivasha, near Hells Gate National Park, where you can cycle amongst the herds of plains game, and walk through the red cliffs of the Njorowa Gorge. We enjoy afternoon tea on the grassy lawns of Elsamere with the black and white colobos monkeys. Hippos lounge in the lake, and come onto the banks at night to graze, allowing excellent viewing of these massive creatures.
Lake Nakuru, home to greater and lesser flamingoes, as well as black and white rhino, lion, baboons, giraffe and leopard is the next stop, and we have a day for game drives through this National Park.
The grasslands of the Mara and the Serengeti is the place to view the greatest wildlife show on earth, the migration of thousands of herds of wildebeest, zebra, gazelle as well as the predators that follow. We next head to the Mara where camping in the parks, you can hear the nocturnal wildlife in surround sound reverberating into the night.
Tanzania
The Kenya and Tanzania safari then moves into the world famous Serengeti. During the months when the migrations moves out of the Mara into the Serengeti from early November, trips visit Sweetwater Reserve near Mt Kenya in place of the Mara, home of the only chimpanzee sanctuary in Kenya, as well as all the other game you would wish to see.
After game viewing in the Serengeti and the Ngorongoro Crater, the road carries us to the base of Mt Kilimanjaro where we have the opportunity to do a day walk to the base camp and view the surrounding landscape.
We finish the trip visiting Zanzibar, taking the ferry from the port at Dar Es Salaam to the capital Stone Town. There we can visit and haggle in the markets of Stone Town, found in the labyrinthine streets of this Arab port town. A spice tour around the local highlights and spice island, and the daily food markets is another place to experience the unique culture of this magical island. Watch the sun go down over the ocean from the balcony of the African House Hotel, visit the Jozani forest to see the red Colobus monkeys, go snorkeling off Prison Island and see its giant tortoise or just relax on the white sandy beaches of Kendwa in the North.
Optional excursions include the chance to go on a dolphin boat cruise on the south coast of Zanzibar, or go snorkeling on Mnemba Atoll.
