Live and teach in one of the most beautiful and pristine countries in the World! With Oyster you will have the chance to become completely immersed in another way of life and will come to think of your Nepalese family that you will live with as being your second home. The schools and projects that you will work in are based in and around Nepal’s capital city: Kathmandu which provides our volunteers with their social life at weekends.
With this placement we are lucky enough to include 4 amazing trips through Tibet, Nepal and the Himalayas.
But if you don’t have 4 months free for this trip we also have a shorter 5 week summer placement; with 4 weeks volunteering in one of our great projects followed by a week trekking in the Himalayas and a rafting or safari trip.
The Projects...
Oyster has a well-established reputation with our Nepalese schools and as such is able to offer great volunteer roles where you can really make a difference. The schools that we send volunteers to have pupils who can already speak basic English so your role as a volunteer is getting these children to use their imagination for example in writing stories. This type of work is important so that the children get a good understanding of English to get them ahead in their chosen professions.
Equally as important as the teaching, are the passions and interests that you bring with you to do with the children. Sports, drama, music and art are all very popular in all the schools. Recently two of volunteers put on a musical production of Jack and the Beanstalk which was a real hit!
Accommodation...
Most of you will live with local Nepali families in the same village as the school. However a couple of the schools and projects have their own accommodation that pairs of volunteers will stay in. This is usually boarding school accommodation and comes in really handy when you are running after-school clubs right on your door-step! You will be staying in the same room as another volunteer giving you the perfect opportunity to plan terrific lessons and activities together for the next day.
Living with a family sounds pretty daunting to most people; but it really is the best way to start feeling at home in the country and more importantly it helps so much in learning the local language. You will become part of the family and will be treated with remarkable hospitality; being invited to family gatherings and eating with the family.
Do I get a social life..?
Most volunteers go into Kathmandu at the weekends to catch up with each other, which provides quite a contrast to the more rural village schools that you will be working in during the week. It has bars, clubs, internet and everything you could need at the weekend.
Accommodation there is very cheap meaning you can stay the night for the equivalent of just £2.50 per night.
The schools do have academic holidays and during these times you can get to see the parts of Nepal that visitors rarely visit, through independent travel and trekking. You are also help out other projects in Kathmandu if you are there when there is a longer school holiday.
The Trips...
Included with the placement are 4 awe-inspiring trips that let you learn even more about the Nepalese and Tibetan people.
- You will go on a 10 day Himalayan trek at the beginning of your time in Nepal allowing you to really get to know your group, trekking through villages within the snow-capped mountains with amazing views.
- There is also a 10 day cultural tour of neighbouring Tibet; “the Roof of the World” and one of the most remote places in the world. You will learn about the fascinating history and culture of the recently highlighted Tibet, visiting Monasteries, Temples and other places of natural beauty.
- A thrilling 2 day white water rafting trip along Trisuli River going through the beautiful Alpine meadows, pine forests and lowland jungle!
- Often a highlight to your time away is a 2 day safari in Chitwan National Park where you can spot Nepal’s majestic Bengal tigers, one-horned Rhinos and Indian Elephants.
You’ll see some of the world’s most breathtaking scenery and beautiful animals. Really not to be missed.
Oyster Worldwide Support
Being a small and personal Gap Year company, our dedicated team of 3 full time staff really take the time to get to know you and provide a personal service.
- When we receive your application, we invite you to an informal interview and tell you all about the placement that you have applied for.
- 3 months before departure, we meet you and the rest of your group again at the Pre Departure Course to tell you even more about the country and project that you will be working in.
- Once in Nepal, our Representative Basant becomes your main point of contact, being there to help with any problems either at the placement or in your personal life.
Here at Oyster, we have the right balance between support and independence and as such our representatives are not your typical ‘holiday rep’, we like to think of them as helpful friends to you. We do encourage you to be independent and help yourself but should you need it you can feel assured that you have our established support network on hand at any time.
Basant has been our Nepal Representative since our first volunteers went out in 2000. He has lived and worked in Kathmandu for most of his life. He will meet you at the airport and provide a thorough orientation course which covers all you need to know about living in Nepal. Basant works in central Kathmandu and volunteers often pop in and see him when they are in town as our reps become real friends to our participants. As such he is still in touch with many past volunteers.
