The most important skill you’ll need is flexibility, as the work is wide and varied and can change over time. Bring bags of initiative and be willing to work in a team as you’ll be meeting people from all walks of life. Don’t forget Sri Lanka is near the equator so you’ll be working in hot, basic conditions with few resources, so take a few brisk walks before you come to make sure you’re reasonably fit! Oh and don’t bring your best white t-shirt as you’ll probably get dirty!

Someone prepared to get very dirty! You will need to work hard and love the outdoors as you’ll be outside in all weathers-hopefully it will be sunny all day but you never know! Building experience is not necessary buy if you have a specific skill it will be welcomed. Make sure you’re committed to the project and its long term goals; although your work is valuable and appreciated, sometimes the activities can seem repetitive. This is the perfect placement to take as part of a gap year and can be combined with other i-to-i projects.

Flexible, hard-working volunteers who enjoy working with people and want to make a difference to communities affected by poverty, while based near Cape Town in the wonderful town of Stellenbosch! Volunteers must be able to commit for three months and have a good grasp of English. You must be prepared to work irregular hours in a challenging environment.
