BUNAC’s Volunteer South Africa programme offers you the chance to spend 8 weeks working as a volunteer on a community based project in and around beautiful Cape Town. This is your opportunity to experience life within this dynamic city whilst helping to improve life for people living in the townships.
The type of project you are placed in depends on the skills you have to offer at the time of your application. The majority of projects involve either education, childcare, HIV/AIDS awareness, environment/agriculture, healthcare and tourism. Typical placements include helping in schools and crèches, working with disadvantaged youths, helping to develop tourism in rural villages and helping within animal sanctuaries.
BUNAC arranges your placement and group travel to Cape Town where you will take part in a 1 week arrival orientation which will enable you to get to know your group, and learn about the practicalities of life in South Africa, including culture, customs and safety issues. You will also enjoy pre-arranged tours with your orientation group, including excursions to Cape Point, Robben Island, Table Mountain and a wine tasting trip to Kirstenbosch. Once you’ve completed the orientation you’ll start work at your placement. Accommodation is provided, typically in home stays.
Once your placement is over you’ll have plenty of free time to travel and explore South Africa.
Our users say..
"Before taking part on Volunteer South Africa my only travelling experience was 6 weeks in Europe as part of a pre-university gap year, so this time I really wanted to do something different. I looked at all the opportunities available and decided that volunteering in Africa would really give me the chance to explore a completely different culture.
I spent 8 weeks over the summer working in a primary school called Sunnyside on the Cape flats. I helped to teach young children to read, write and learn maths. I also led chess classes to help prepare them for an end-of-summer chess tournament.
I lived with a host family in a shanty town just outside of Cape Town, sharing my room with another volunteer. I’m still in touch with my host family and would love to go back to see them.
After my placement I took an amazing trip through Zambia, Botswana, Namibia and Kruger Park before flying home. The whole experience totally exceeded my expectations and was the best summer of my life"
