This organisation works to promote rock music in India and to nurture home-grown talent. They organise a large annual music festival in Chennai, host weekly concerts for local bands and run regular battle of the bands competitions. The centre houses a modern recording studio where albums are recorded by local bands. There is also a music school for tuition in musical instruments like guitars, drums, bass and keyboards. But it is not all about the music. This organisation has an active involvement in community development, sponsoring underprivileged students through college, and campaigning against drug and alcohol abuse amongst the youth.
Your role here will very much depend on where your talents lie. This is not only a project for musicians. If you do play guitar, drums, bass or keyboards you can teach your instrument in the music school and hold workshops for students. For those with an interest in recording, you can lend a hand in the recording studio, using your knowledge and learning some tricks of the trade. While you’re there you might also want to start a band or maybe join an existing one.
Non-musicians can also get involved by helping with events management, marketing and promotion of concerts, festivals and other events. You might want to suggest your own event while you are there, and spend your time organising that with the support of the staff. Lots of volunteers are needed in July and August to help organise a large scale rock festival in Chennai.
This is a great way to gain experience in all areas of the music industry, and at the same time, getting involved in the cultural life of modern India and inspiring young people through music.
