Overview

Work in demanding yet hugely rewarding placements in one of the few undiscovered regions of Eastern Europe. Give underprivileged, sick and disabled children the chance to smile, play and love in beautiful Eastern Europe. Oyster can offer you the chance to help in a variety of children's institutions in Brasov including family homes (orphanages) and hospitals.

Rewarding work with children

For five years we have been working successfully with a number of childcare placements that we can offer you. ‘Family Homes’ are dedicated small orphanages which house up to 12 children, some of which are especially for physically and mentally disabled children. Additionally we have places for volunteers in a central children’s hospital, Romania’s first ever Hospice and placements in state nurseries and primary schools.

Oyster WorldwideVolunteers need to have a passion for working with children; our best volunteers are affectionate and not afraid to give and receive plenty of hugs. Your enthusiasm and attention will enable these children to develop, play and enjoy their childhood. Many of our volunteers choose to combine several different projects; working in more than one location adds variety and can be more productive.

Life in Romania

The placements are in and around Brasov, a beautiful city surrounded by wooded mountains. You will be based in central Brasov living in a comfortable flat that Oyster will rent for you and your fellow volunteers. Please expect to share a room. You can go out or cook for yourself in the evening.

We believe that living in relative comfort is important and should help you unwind when you are working hard.

Your free time

The town has a wonderful mix of European architecture, a beautiful square and a lively nightlife and is a surprise highlight for many of our volunteers. Romania has stunning scenery, including mountains, good Ski slopes, forests and the Black Sea coastline. Romania also borders Hungary and a trip to Budapest is a popular choice for many of our volunteers.

Oyster Worldwide Support

Our friendly UK team will be there to help you up to your departure, making sure that all the arrangements are in place. Shortly before you leave we’ll hold a pre-departure course where you’ll meet fellow volunteers and get thorough preparation to help you with working and living in Romania. Your placements have been arranged by our experienced bilingual representative; he will meet you at Bucharest airport and you will have the first couple of days to visit the various projects and find your way around Brasov. His role is to be a helpful friend to you and to steer you through difficulties of any kind. He will keep us updated on your health and welfare.

He will ensure your time in Romania is as productive, enjoyable and rewarding as it can be. You will see him regularly at work and at informal outings and his support on arrival, whilst you settle in, and during your placements will ensure your time away is a life long positive experience.

Our users say...

Oyster Worldwide"The memories I have of working in Romanian orphanages are ones that will stay with me forever. We spent our time in several orphanages as well as a children’s hospital working with children of every age from new-born right up to eighteen. Teaching the toddlers to walk on their own, and seeing the beam of achievement on their faces, was one of the most gratifying experiences of the trip. Alix Young.

"There is a great choice of placements and some of the children have enormous potential. It’s no surprise so many people return to Romania and with Oyster. I definitely will." Tamsin Clube

"I have had the most wonderful experience for the last 3 months. I recommend the placement to others. The kids are adorable and the town is beautiful." Michelle Andrew

"The best thing I have ever done. I found it very worthwhile and at the same time a challenge and great fun." Joanna Weston Smith

"I am so glad I came to Romania, it has (and I think always will be) the best thing I have ever done. I’m glad I came with a company like Oyster which gave me so much support and guidance." Chloe Leadbetter
