For applicants from the UK, we have a number of bursary schemes available for volunteers from a variety of backgrounds.

Our bursary scheme and funded placement projects reduce the barrier of cost for young people experiencing financial problems. They are designed to help young people who would not otherwise be able to afford to go.

School placements in Tanzania are in primary and secondary state and plantation schools in rural areas away from Dar Es Salam. One of the plantation schools is well run and located in a beautiful isolated mountain place. The lessons are in English and teaching is very rewarding here. The pupils are the children of employees. Other school plantation is less organised and resources are minimal. All lessons are taught in Swahili, resulting in a low level of English amongst both students and teachers. For these reasons volunteers support is very much appreciated in this school.

State schools are less resourced. Lattitude is working closely with the education authorities to support the teaching of English in these schools. Placements are mainly for teaching children in secondary education. Schools are a mixture of long and recent established community secondary school. In one of the schools students are mainly Muslim. These new community secondary schools are generating a lot of excitement because they have widened access to secondary education. Some schools do not yet have electricity, even if the village does.

In plantation schools, volunteers teach English and, usually, one other subject. Volunteers assist teachers with other classes: maths, religion, even Swahili. In the afternoon you may teach art and music. After school you may help teachers and other employees with their English. When the teachers are absent, you may be asked to cover their classes for the secondary school in your own specialised (A level) subjects. The primary school is where you will do most of your teaching and the Secondary, where you may organise clubs and societies.

In state schools volunteers are required to assist the teaching of English throughout the school as well as mathematics, science and civics at primary level, but higher up the school in the subjects they have studied to A level. All secondary education takes place in the English language, so that and the fact that you will have some older, keener students in your classes will make class-control and lesson-preparation easier.

Clubs and extra-curricular activities (music, drama and, particularly, football) are loved by the children but are started solely on your own initiative. Art, music, drama and sport all find their place here. You may find that teachers would love the chance to improve their English, so you could suggest informal conversation classes after school.

Tanzania is among the top ten countries in the world rich in biodiversity and it is a leading country in wildlife conservation in Africa. Tanzania has a number of important endangered animal species in the world such as Black Rhino, Wild Dog, Chimpanzee, Elephant and Crocodile (Slender Snorted Crocodile). During holidays or after the end of your placement you will have the opportunity to learn about all what Tanzania has to offer.

Our users say...

"I cannot honestly say that I am able to look back on my gap year and see it as a wholly selfless experience. Although the intention was definitely on going out to help people less fortunate than myself, the memories I have brought back of the people I met, the things I saw and the things I did are just overwhelming. I did more in a day than I have ever done in a week in England.

My Gap year had it all. Not only that but I brought home with me a knowledge of Africa that most never achieve in all their life. I have survived alone in another country, I have personally and positively influenced the lives of people thousands of miles away from me and many worlds apart."
