Ghana is renowned for being perhaps the friendliest country in West Africa. If you want to experience the real Africa, Ghana is a great place to start. BUNAC’s Volunteer Ghana programme places participants in community based projects in rural and urban Ghana.

Participants travel to Ghana on group flights and spend five days on arrival in the capital Accra where they take part in an arrival orientation. Once the orientation period is over, participants then move on to their placements. Initial placements are for 3 months however these can then be extended.

Placements can be in both rural communities and towns and are developed according to the skills and interests of the participant. Placements include working in a rural community assisting with teaching at the local primary or secondary school, working on HIV/Aids education projects, working on family planning projects or working to help improve levels of sanitation within communities.

Participants are placed in the same town or village as another volunteer however they may work at different placements. On weekends there are opportunities for volunteers to meet up to explore the country, and many people take time after the end of their project to travel with the new friends they have made.

Our users say...

"When planning my time abroad I wanted a programme that suited my wish to volunteer at a grassroots level and immerse myself in an African community. During the placement I lived with a family in Ghana and spent lots of time learning from my host mother and playing with her children.

I volunteered for an HIV/AIDS organisation and went into the local community visiting schools, orphanages and commercial sex workers, holding meetings and making presentations about the risks of infection. We also visited people infected with the disease, distributing medication and offering support and encouragement.

I gained knowledge, skills and confidence whilst volunteering. I found myself giving presentations, teaching classes of school children, fundraising, promoting HIV/AIDS awareness, and conducting market research. Volunteering experiences are a great addition to your CV as they help to set you apart from other applicants.

I’d advise potential volunteers to be as flexible as possible and open to new experiences. It is challenging adapting to life in a developing, but the benefits far outweigh the difficulties. I now want to use my travels and volunteering experience in combination with my degree to work in an industry and job that I enjoy."
