Where is the placement ?These Changing Worlds teaching placements are in and around the city of San Pedro Sula. This is the second largest Honduran City. It is a busy city full of shops, markets, bars, discos, and cafes. The town has excellent reliable and cheap road and air access to all parts of Honduras.
What will I do ?
You will work as an assistant in a school. Our placements are in primary and secondary schools. You will help in teaching English up to GCSE standard. If you are prepared to turn your hand to other subject areas this will be very well received. The biggest impact you can make is not necessarily in the classroom. We encourage all volunteers to take an active role in extra curricular activities - such as sport, drama, music and art. This is great fun and builds excellent relationships with the children in your care. We need people who can be flexible.
Where will I live ?
In most cases you will live with a host family. The accommodation is basic but more than adequate. You will have access to toilet and shower facilities. Your hosts will provide nutritious food that will give you a full and varied diet throughout your stay. Despite all the hardships you will find yourself fully immersed into a warm and caring atmosphere where you will be free to share your special talents and interests with those who will really appreciate it.
What support do I get ?
Our Changing Worlds representative, Kenny Mackay, will meet you on arrival at San Pedro Sula international airport. Kenny, whose distant ancestors come from Scotland, was born in Honduras. He has spent most of his life in Honduras although he spent some time living and working in Miami in the USA - hence his excellent English. You will enjoy two weeks orientation in San Pedro Sula where you will do a Spanish course, and Kenny will brief you further about working and living in Honduras. Kenny will organize the transport to your placement. He will contact you and your hosts regularly to check on your health and welfare and make at least one visit to see how everything is going.
What do I need ?
A positive attitude is a must and you must be someone who does not shirk responsibilities. This would suit someone who wishes to learn Spanish and who likes to have lots of fun.
You will need a UK passport valid six months beyond your stay in Honduras. We will tell you all about applying for a visa before you leave the UK.
You will need adequate travel insurance for the entire period you are planning to be away from the UK.
Am I eligible ?
Yes, as long as you love children and are prepared to work long hours.
What do I do in my free time?Where should we start? Honduras offers a lot of wonderful experiences! There are mountains to climb, rivers to canoe, forests to explore on your doorstep. If you enjoy wildlife then there is plenty to find locally.
Further a field you can drive (or take a bus) to La Cieba, that is two hours away, where they have a great carnival in the spring, There are cloud forests and mangrove swamps. It is a haven for wildlife of all descriptions. There are regular (and cheap) ferry trips from La Cieba out to the Bay Islands that is home to some of the best coral diving in the World!
You can go out to Trujillo - three hours away - and the tropical Caribbean Sea for the weekend where you can go snorkeling and swimming with the dolphins. Trujillo is a tourist town so there are plenty of bars and restaurants to enjoy. The town is very safe and you will quickly make friends with all the locals - they certainly know how to party!
What is the cost ?
The cost covers return flights from London to San Pedro Sula, accommodation and food, UK briefing, orientation on arrival and on going support whilst in Honduras. You will enjoy a one-week tour of the ancient ruins of Copain and neighbouring Guatamala and a Spanish course as part of your initial orientation.
