A diving gap year means being part of a world many only dream of - and being paid to be there. The recreational dive industry continues to grow thanks to the huge interest in the marine world. The growth of eco-tourism also means many of the locations are quite simply the best the world has to offer. Lord Howe Island and the Great Barrier Reef, for example, are both regular locations for our graduates in their first jobs as dive professionals.

A dive instructor qualification is a highly prized possession in the watersports industry. Whether you're after short or long-term work, the opportunities are limited only by your willingness to travel: there are thousands of dive centres around the world, in some of the planet's most amazing locations. The options open to professional divers are numerous and can be well paid. This makes the dive instructor qualification an ideal choice for a gap year. Additionally, qualified dive instructors will have excellent opportunities for summer work throughout their university holidays.

Course content

You train at Sydney's Pro Dive Academy, staying at Manly near one of Sydney's most spectacular beaches.

For the first six weeks you train towards your Divemaster qualification - the first step to going pro - so much of your time is water based. You also learn about enriched air and different gas blends and get to grips with dive centre operations.

Next you put your Divemaster ticket into practise and spend a week assisting with Open Water courses and training for your Emergency First Response Instructor qualification. To broaden your experience and increase your appeal to employers, you also do a Powerboat Level 2 course.

The final module is your Instructor Development Course (IDC). This is designed to teach you all you need to know about dive training within the PADI scheme, as well as preparing you for the specific job of teaching the sport. This is followed by Pro Dive's IDC Plus, where you recap the essential skills, practise your teaching techniques and undertake a mock exam. A short period of revision and practical rehearsal ensures you are ready to pass your Instructor Evaluation with flying colours.

The course is designed for divers holding PADI Open Water or an equivalent, entry-level qualification. If you are already qualified as an Advanced or Rescue Diver you can either log extra dives or recap those early courses.
