With courses from two to 18 weeks and a range of sports from traditional dinghy sailing to the adrenalin-packed surfing, the Sail and Board Sport (SBS) courses make the most flexible gap year possible. We follow the sun and wind around the world, travelling to some great training locations. From October to May we're sailing, surfing and windsurfing in Sydney, Australia. From May to October we're based at Vassiliki, Greece, for sailing and windsurfing.
Course content
The Basic Traineeship is designed to allow maximum time for personal skills development on the water. It is suitable for beginners and early intermediates who are happy to accept a steep learning curve.

The first two weeks provide intensive foundation training. We teach you how to sail effectively, and we provide essential courses in first aid and rescue boat driving.
The middle two weeks are the core of the skill-building programme. You sail under the guidance of expert coaches who guarantee to improve your performance on the water. You are working towards passing the RYA's 'pre-entry' assessment, a test of your sailing skills.
The final two weeks are devoted to instructor training and assessment, focusing on the coaching skills needed to train beginners and improvers in single and two-handed sailing dinghies. You will develop an imaginative approach to teaching safe and efficient sailing, as well as the theory that underlies it. We make sure you have time to learn and practise the necessary teaching techniques before being examined.
To gain the instructor qualification you need to demonstrate good communication skills, an understanding of the training scheme, in-depth theory knowledge, group management ability, safety awareness and an effective coaching style.
You have the choice of two stunning locations for this course - either Greece or Australia. Club Vass, Vassiliki in Lefkas and Middle Harbour Yacht Club and Balmoral Sailing in Sydney.

"I was training with all types of sailors from complete beginners to people that were more experienced than me and It taught me a lot, especially in the teaching side of things. I learnt how to pass my skills on to all levels of sailing experience and also how to speak to a group which is something that I couldn’t do very confidently before.
The sailing was a lot of fun, based Middle Harbour in Sydney, we were welcomed with some nice southerly winds of up to 20 knots. This was ideal for the asymmetric dinghies and taught us a lot about sailing. One of the highlights was learning how to run a “Day Trip” sailing all the way to a beach off Shark Island. Not only was this area beautiful but was also on the race track for the 18ft skiffs which was definitely exciting.
After the course I received heaps of help finding a job, with contacts off the website, advice from the careers adviser and also my Fish instructor Ben. I was landed myself a job in Greece with a company called WildWind. This was very exciting as the company is based in Vassiliki right next door to the Flying Fish base in Greece. After hearing about Wild Winds high performance boats and the promise of winds of over 20 knots most afternoons I couldn’t wait to pack my bags and get over there.
I had so much fun and learnt so much in the season working with Wild Wind. It was fantastic the people I was working with were all great people and are all now great friends.”
