Business skills work experience with Community Development
Community Development in a rural Zulu community working on the famous battlefield of Rorke's Drift. Work with a famous arts and crafts centre and help run the business to empower and also train local people to run the business for themselves.

This project is located in rural KwaZulu Natal in the heart of a Zulu community. The area of Rorke's Drift has stunning scenery and plenty to offer for those interested in hiking and outdoor activities.

This project would suit someone who is business minded and experienced within business and knows how to run a company because you'll be assisting a community arts and crafts organisation which is run by local Zulu people. The centre needs help with how to run the business and to develop it in order to benefit the local community and provide them with a sustainable income. Your assistance here would be to help them achieve these objectives.

About Rorkes Drift
Rorke's Drift is home to one of the most famous battle fields in history and in particular British history, it is the sight where 139 British soldiers defeated between 4,000 and 5,000 Zulus. The battle is also famous for the fact that 11 Victoria crosses were awarded after the battle the highest ever in single battle in British military history. The art centre where the project is based is based on the battle fields itself.

About your work
As a volunteer on this project you will be involved in a number of roles:

• Administration work
• Scheduling
• Financial Management
• Training the staff how to run the organisation
• Proposal Writing (will be limited)
• PR and fundraising (will be limited)

You role will be to work in the day to day running of the arts and crafts centre assisting with the administration of the organisation as well as training the staff and helping them to learn how to run a business. The objective of this placement is to let the staff help themselves and the business through your training and help so they can run the centre as a sustainable and locally run organisation.

As well as training the staff you may have the opportunity to get involved with a bit of PR and fundraising, but this will be limited as the main emphasis of your project is to get the administration side of the centre up and running efficiently so the staff can act for themselves through your training.

You will work under the guidance of Christiana who is a German based volunteer at the centre. She has been running it for the past 2 years and is very grateful for any assistance from our volunteers.

You will be working from Monday - Friday typically 9 - 5, and on the weekend you will have time off to explore the local attractions.

Project requirements and who this project would suit

• Someone with an experience of working within business
• Someone who does not mind being in a remote area
• Someone who wishes to get totally involved in the project
• Someone who is willing to be immersed in a totally different work and lifestyle culture
• Someone who is interested in arts and crafts
• Someone who is interested in history
• A mature volunteer

Project Requirements:
This project duration is for a minimum of 2 months, but ideally 3 months or longer

You should have a business background including some knowledge of at least one of the following:

• Accounting/bookkeeping
• Telephone and customer relations
• Basic office skills
• Fundraising and possible knowledge of PR

Accommodation
Accommodation is based in the village of Rorke's Drift right next to the battlefield and a 2 minute walk from your work.

You will be living in a self catering apartment with either yourself or another volunteer. You will have your own room or you will share a roomThe accommodation has a number of bedrooms, kitchen, dinning/sitting room, bathroom and garden.

On the weekends you will have the opportunity to go out of Rorke's Drift and do a number of activates such as hiking as there are numerous mountains and hills surrounding Rorke's Drift, white water rafting,safari to a game park about 25km away or visiting some of the other nearby battlefields such as Islandwana.

Food
You will be given a food allowance and once a week you will be able to go and do a food shop in the local town of Dundee which has a variety of supermarkets and restaurants. You will be able to cook your own food in your accommodation which is well equipped with oven, stove, fridge, freeze and the usual utensils.
