We work in Cochabamba, a vibrant university town with a superb climate. Located in central Bolivian highlands Cochabamba has warm days and cool nights. It’s a cosmopolitan city attracting students from throughout South America.Volunteers are needed at various 'Centros de Salud', public health clinics open to everyone in Cochabamba, regardless of their ability to pay. With very basic facilities, the health clinics attend to mostly minor emergencies, accidents and routine visits. There is insufficient funding to maintain the facilities in complete working order, or provide the hospital with sufficient staff or materials. Therefore, volunteers are really needed to help and your work will be greatly appreciated. At the Centros de Salud you have the opportunity to work in a variety of departments; possible options include nursing, assisting with surgery, paediatrics, gynaecology, admissions and pharmacy work.
There is also an opportunity to work at the burns unit at the Cochabamba hospital. You will be working with children aged from 0 – 15, helping them overcome a traumatic experience and helping them throughout their recovery process. This is also a great placement for anyone interested in physiotherapy. Other work available involves community based work, attending home visits in surrounding areas.
Our users say..."My overall experience has been very positive and beneficial to the way I live my live. My time in Bolivia was character building and has prepared me in some ways for independent living in adult life. I would recommend this sort of thing to anyone who doesn’t know what they want to do or anyone who wants an exciting gap year." - Chris Jones
