Product Details

Mongolia is a vast land of desert and mountains. We work in Ulaan Baatar, the capital city of this country which once ruled Asia and a fair chunk of Europe. Ulaan Baatar is a city on the steppe that struggles to cope with its Capitalist status.

Our Medical Experience and Observation projects will provide you with an excellent preparation for your career in medicine. You will experience the stark contrast between medical practice in the West and developing countries, and are likely to gain unparalleled experience of a number of conditions which, for social or economic reasons have been left untreated and have developed into advanced pathological conditions.

You will be involved in the day-to-day running of hospitals and clinics, observing or directly assisting doctors and nurses. The gap year programme is mainly observational. Volunteers shadow a doctor etc around various wards in a hospital or clinic. You might find yourself, for example, watching surgery in the operating theatre such as a birth by caesarean section, or working with a doctor on her rounds in a big city hospital. By demonstrating initiative and enthusiasm, you can help out in simple but practical ways, whilst vastly increasing your medical knowledge.

All volunteers are allocated a supervisor within their placement, and also have the back-up of our staff in the local office in Ulaan Baatar and the UK. Volunteers stay with a local family in the city.

During your time off there is a whole city for you to enjoy. Once out of the city is endless land with no boundaries... why not explore the Altai mountains or the Gobi desert. Spend the weekend in a nomad settlement. After their placement many volunteers head to China - to Beijing, or Russia - experiencing, on the way, some time on the Trans-Siberian railway.

Our users say...

"Working in the maternity ward was amazing and visiting the temple with my host family was great. It was lovely to go with locals who knew what to do" - Carly Isaac.
