Magical India is a land of striking contrasts. Monsoon forests and elephants; the Himalayas and the Taj Mahal; the temples of Tamil Nadu and the palaces of Rajasthan. Our placements are based in the far South of India, in the dry and dusty Tamil Nadu, and lush green Kerala.
The two regions are separated by the Western Ghat mountains, home to numerous birds, mammals, and local tea and cardamom growers.
Traditionally a neglected profession in India, vets have had to fight against indifference. Nowadays, though, the welfare of domestic animals is seen as an essential part of rural development and also a symbol of modern attitudes. In short, veterinary medicine is now important and volunteers with a keen interest are very welcome.
You will soon be involved in vaccinations, operations, laboratory work, post-mortems, meat inspections and the routine treatments of domestic farm animals and pets.
Day to day, volunteers will shadow a vet, assisting with treatment of mainly livestock -particularly cows, goats and chickens. You will witness first hand how vets work in a difficult environment.
Volunteers often see examples of conditions rare or eradicated in the UK, learn how to diagnose these, and treat them.
Volunteers often have the opportunity to travel into rural areas, where the villagers cannot easily bring their animals to a veterinary clinic. This is a unique opportunity to experience village life from an insider’s perspective, and assist with important clinical procedures.
You can help them make a real impact on the welfare of animals - and thus help to improve the economy of some Indian villages.
All volunteers are allocated a supervisor within their placement, and also have the backup of our staff in the local office in Sivakasi and the UK.
Volunteers usually stay with a local family, though occasionally accommodation may be provided at the placement.Females tend to stay with families, whilst males are often housed together in hostel accommodation for cultural reasons.
During your spare time, there are great opportunities here for travelling around India. Tamil Nadu itself contains the Ghat mountains and many spiritual centres.
There are wonderful temples, excellent national parks, cool mountain resorts and empty sandy beaches. Almost every village is connected to the rest of the country by bus or train. Both are a wonderful way to explore the Rest of India.
Our users say..."It was a totally different experience from anything I'd get at home. I was lucky to get some hands-on experience and saw diseases that we vaccinate against in the UK, but never come across, even one case of rabies." - Mary-Rose Best
