The adventure phase in Borneo can form part of an expedition. It is a tough physical and mental challenge. During the trek volunteers learn jungle skills to survive one of the most arduous environments on earth and when you finish you will feel confident that you can do and overcome anything.
Here are an example of the adventure phase we run in Borneo. Please be aware that this may change and is just a guide to the types of adventure phase you can expect on a Borneo expedition.
10 week Expedition
The trekking element of this project will see teams trekking from Long Pasia for up to 11 - 12 days unsupported; teams will be carrying all their own supplies and equipment for the duration. The trekking will be across arduous and physically challenging terrain, which will often mean they are extremely remote and will need them to be fully self sufficient. Teams will camp wild near the trail, ensuring they have a minimal impact on the local surroundings which will include leaving nothing behind. Where necessary teams will assist local guides to upgrade the trail through the dense vegetation since the jungle very quickly grows back across trails. Teams will obviously have the opportunity to learn about the pristine rainforest environment as they progress.
As well as trekking, volunteers will get the chance to scuba dive off Mamutik Island gaining open water, advanced, or rescue PADI courses. In partnership with Borneo Divers and Sabah Parks, Raleigh volunteers spend 4 days doing their PADI Open Water diving qualification followed by 2 days of either reef survey work, an underwater clean up or collecting data (coral condition, fish and invertebrate counts) for the international Reef Check Project.
5 week Adventure challenge
Venturers will embark on a top secret Adventure Challenge which will be over challenging and varying terrain. They will be stretched both mentally and physically to the limit over the final 7 - 10 days of their expedition. Please note diving is not available for volunteers joining a 5 week Borneo expedition.
What training will I get?
You will be invited to a pre-expedition training event where you'll be able to meet other venturers joining your expedition. You'll learn more about your projects, kit and medical requirements and do some group activity. When you arrive in country you’ll also have an induction. This includes safety briefings, risk assessment, casualty evacuation; training in the correct and safe use of tools, camping equipment, and safety equipment including radios.
What is the deadline for applying for an expedition?
We run expeditions throughout the year and encourage venturers to apply between six and 18 months in advance to ensure you get the place you want and give you time to raise the money. We do accept applications up to a month in advance, however you will have missed out on the UK training weekend, you may not get the place you want and you will have to organise your fundraising and vaccinations very quickly.
