There is great demand for qualified instructors, with job opportunities all over the world for windsurfers and dinghy sailors to work as a windsurfing or dinghy sailing instructor.
Instructor lifestyle
The instructor lifestyle is unbeatable although entry-level jobs are not too highly paid. On the plus side, you work in the sunshine and have plenty of time to improve your own skills and enjoy your favourite sport of windsurfing or dinghy sailing. This is the life.
What do I need
You need professional qualifications to be a windsurfing instructor or dinghy instructor, and that's where Flying Fish comes in. Most companies prefer staff who are multi-qualified and experienced, so we recommend our dual sport Traineeships as the most reliable route into the industry. If you combine windsurfing with surfing or dinghy sailing you are destined for the best instructor jobs in the industry.
What will I earn
You should expect to earn a weekly wage of no more than GBP 100 / AUD 200 / USD 200 in your first job in Europe. But - living expenses are minimal, your accommodation is provided and in many places you get meals as well. If you start work in Australia you should be paid AUD 20 an hour. With more experience and promotion the rate goes up, of course. A Senior Instructor at an established UK training centre can expect a salary of GBP 18,000.
The next step
After a season as a windsurfing instructor or dinghy instructor in the Med you’ll want to spread your wings. The Med season runs to October or November, when the time is right to head off for winter in the Caribbean or Middle East, or maybe down to Australia for an endless summer.
There are windsurfing schools, sailing clubs and training centres in fabulous places all over the world. Many of them advertise jobs here at flyingfishonline.com. If you have trained with Flying Fish and done a first season's work as an instructor with a big company you will be well placed for a good job in a high wind centre.
