Teach English near La Fortuna, Costa Rica
La Fortuna is located in a rural area in the Central Valley of Costa Rica near to the Arenal volcano but don`t worry it isn`t too close. Most of the countries resources are set aside to help the large cities and the towns further away from the main cities suffer as the resources are dried up by the time they get outside the cities. It is the people here that need the most help and a better education is a means to that better life. The community is aiming to provide the future eco guides for their area so it is important that the children of the schools are taught English, both written and spoken, to a good standard to achieve these aims. Your help is needed as you work as a teaching assistant in the schools teaching English in a variety of forms – games, singing and teaching in the traditional classroom but bringing the element of fun with it as well. You will find the children are eager to learn and will hang on your every word, making it more enjoyable for you too! Your time will be spent from 7am to 5.30pm Monday to Friday in the classroom as an assistant or spending time creating lesson plans, there is a curriculum to follow but you should be able to find ways of making the lessons fun! You will work at one of the local schools where numbers of children can vary between 150 to 800 students aged between 4 to 12 years old.
During your time at the project you will be living with a local homestay family who will make you part of their family and provide an interesting insight into life in Costa Rica. You will be provided with breakfast, lunch and dinner in true Costa Rican style so expect plenty of beans! Your weekends will be free to spend as you will and you may want to travel the 30kms to Arenal Volcano to take a closer look but you will already see the spewing lava and glowing from La Fortuna, it is one of Costa Rica`s main tourist attractions and its most active volcano. Don`t forget your camera though…...!
