Hostels and accommodation
Russia is progressing on the accommodation front and there are a lot more youth hostels in St Petes and Moscow, but you will still find that grim and grotty Soviet hotels are the norm. Outside of Moscow rooms are cheap, but you get what you pay for - bad service and bad facilities. Remember that you will have to fill out a registration form no matter where you stay. I would book in advance because hostel beds are in short supply.
I’ve never stayed in a hostel in Moscow but I’d recommend the Traveller’s Guest House as although it’s a 15-minute walk to the nearest metro station Prospekt Mira, it seemed clean and friendly and the staff speak English.

In St Petes I stayed in the Puppet theatre hostel. It was 500 roubles a night, very central, English speaking staff and best of all you get free tickets for the puppet show next door!

The others time I was in St Petes we stayed with a ‘babushka’, an old woman. They stand with ‘room to rent’ signs at the main train station and you bargain a price with them. This can be really cheap and more interesting than your run-of-the-mill hostel, but it’s best to have Russian and you aren’t always sure there will be free rooms.
