Nightlife & going out

  • Clubbing is mainly limited to Moscow and St Petersburg, elsewhere the nightlife can be pretty dull and dated - the ‘80s classics are still going strong. In summer the weather livens everything up and as the summer cafes emerge from hibernation there is a real party buzz in the air.

  • Moscow: In such a huge and wealthy city there is no shortage of night-time hangouts. Just beware that they can be pricy and the bouncers fairly harsh on face control. Ilene Hacker had the hard job of trawling the streets to bring you these recommendations:

Kult: bar/club with several rooms and different DJs on every night; music ranges from afro jazz beats to hip hop, fairly cheap, the friendly Russian clientele is definitely on the cooler side and there’s democratic face control.
Fabrique: a huge two-floor club with a really good buzz and frequent internationally-known DJs, very expensive, democratic face control.
Tochka: a huge live alternative music venue where you can play pool or air hockey, pretty cheap, student vibe and no face control.
Art Garbage: Good food, fairly cheap drinks, no face control and a pretty good buzz if only it was a little more happening.
Kitaisky Lyotchik Dszao Da: good food at decent prices.

  • OUR USERS SAY...
Shalini"The Russians party through the night and into breakfast. It’s common to see people come off the dance floor at six in the morning and sit down to breakfast and coffee before carrying on!

The popular clubs are vast, at least six dance floors in one of the ones we were in last night, plus a few bars. Drinking goes on but no one really gets drunk. It's mostly all sober and any drinking takes place in a bar instead. There's no drunken moshing like a muppet. And incidentally, there's generally no drugs at all involved with clubbing." - Stef Marianski

  • St Petes has a thriving coffee shop culture: I’ve never seen so many in such a confined space in my life, no wonder the nightlife is buzzing as well, everyone is high on caffeine. I’d recommend a club called Dacha. Just off Nevsky Propekt, it’s a tiny little bar with a small dance floor where the soviet anthem follows DJ Shadow and you feel like you’re in someone’s front room.
