Introducing fundraiser Ruth RoadnightRuth has got a mammoth fundraising task ahead of her. She plans to join Operation Mobilisation on their Doulos ship for 13 months... but before she finds her sea legs she needs to raise at least £5000. ![]() Name: Ruth Roadnight Age: 17 Hometown: Aberdeen Scotland. I can't wait to go on my gap year with Operation Mobilisation. They run different gap year programmes (usually for two years instead of just one) as 'mission' work if you like. They send people out to various countries like Azerbaijan, Brazil and Africa. I know of three people away with OM: one has gone to Pakistan, another to Azerbaijan (both teaching English) and one has gone onto the Doulos Ship, as I plan to do. I would be joining the Doulos ship for just over a year (12-13 months) working voluntarily of board. Some people have decided I am crazy to go somewhere to volunteer for something but still have to raise funds to go. I need to raise somewhere in the region of £5000 to £6000 (which yes, I hear you is a lot!) I am in essence supporting the charity instead of just my gap year. The ship has volunteers from all over the world and people from western countries are asked to raise more so that people from countries less well off can still come. There is such a high amount to raise because some of the cost also covers the ships fuel. The Doulos (meaning servant) is one of two ships run by Operation Mobilisation. OM is a Christian organisation which tries to reach out and help people around the world. They hold seminars and international evenings to help educate people. The Doulos has an international crew of about 300 with crew members from 50 different nations. I visited the ship for 5 days when it was in Leith (Edinburgh) and it is totally amazing, you can feel a different atmosphere when you walk on board. It may sound corny but you can feel the love and community on board. The crew work as volunteers on board in different sections doing basically whatever is needed to run a fully operational ship which invites thousands of visitors on board a year. The ship stays in port for a two or three week period before travelling on to the next port. At the present the Doulos is currently travelling around Europe but by the time I get to it, it should have moved on to the Mediterranean and the horn of Africa. In order to raise money, I have got a fundraising ceilidh planned for the 4th March, and I'm going to ask people from my church (where it will be held) to donate food for a finger buffet. Click here >> for an update on Ruth's ceilidh I've also got in mind to have a Jelly Welly Day and have found some volunteers who are willing to walk around school for a day in wellies full of jelly. For this to happen I'm going to have to find a lot of wellies. I think I might approach companies to see if I can borrow them for the day. Plus, I've got some of my friends up for dressing up in super hero outfits for a day (idea from gapyear.com - thank you!) and we'll go round and do some odd jobs. I've also managed to convince my rather crazy friend Lori that it would be fun for her to dress up as a baby and for me to push her around for a day in Aberdeen's town centre. Click here >> for more gapyear.com fundraising ideas My final idea is to break a world record. The idea I came up with was to make the longest line of donated coins. I would ask people in my city to donate coins to my gap year funds and I would publicise it by attempting to break a record by laying them all out. I've yet to find out if there is a record to be broken or what kind of rules there is to be laid down. I could also attempt to get our local radio station and papers interested and could maybe ask a few businesses to donate prizes for a raffle or whatever. Id basically make this event really big by doing other stuff on the day, such as Name The Teddy, number of sweets in the jar or maybe something a bit more inventive such as weight of my twin sister! I’ll let you know how I get on! Ruth x ![]() Click here >> for more on Operation Mobilisation Click here >> for more fundraising diaries Click here >> to get your own diary |
