Popular Routes

A stop gap is a mini-gap year. A few weeks to a few months travelling, volunteering or working abroad; it’s whatever you want it to be, from two weeks on the Isle of Mann to two months in Mongolia; the only thing that’s limiting you is your ambition and imagination.

The two most popular backpacker destinations in the world are Australia and New Zealand, but they’re often overlooked as stop gaps due to the cost and time of flying out there. However, if you do make the trip then you can travel the East Coast of Australia for two weeks and around New Zealand for two weeks:

London >> Cairns >> Brisbane >> Sydney >> Christchurch >> Auckland >> London

South East Asia is the current hot-spot for travellers and it’s becoming more and more popular each year. A lot of university student’s travel to South East Asia on their summer holidays between the months of May to September.

Thailand is the most popular country in South East Asia. On your stop gap you can either spend a few weeks in Thailand or travel around Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam for a couple of months. A popular route is:

London >> Bangkok >> Siem Reap >> Phnom Penh>> Ho Chi Minh City >> Hanoi >> Vientiane >> Bangkok >> London

Another popular route in South East Asia is taking in Malaysia and Singapore:

London >> Bangkok >> Kuala Lumpur >> Singapore >> London

If you want a little adventure on your stop gap then you may be tempted by India. India is cheap to get to and there’s so much to see and do. A popular route is travelling around the Western state of Rajasthan:

London >> Delhi >> Jaipur >> Udaipur >> Jaisalmer >> Amritsar >> Agra >> Delhi >> London

The great thing about travelling around Central and South East Asia is the fact that you don’t need many flights to get from country to country; most of it can be done overland.

And let’s not forget about North America and South America. Both are fantastic destinations and hugely popular as stop gaps, especially travelling the West Coast of the USA. You can even travel from New York to San Francisco if you think you’ve got the time.

As you can see, you’re spoilt for choice on where you can go… and the choice is yours…

If you have any time between school, university or a job then a stop gap is for you. You’ll be amazed what you can do in a short amount of time.
