InterRailing via Eastern Europe
InterRailing via Eastern Europe
Eastern Europe is the low-cost favourite for many travellers and it is one of the most popular InterRailing routes. It’s made up of Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Poland, Romania and Slovakia.
You can unravel the history of Prague, capture the medieval magic of Warsaw, wander through the streets of Romania´s capital Sofia, frighten yourself in Dracula´s home town, Transylvania, and completely immerse yourself in Eastern European culture.
Key stops in Eastern Europe
If you want to InterRail around Eastern Europe then your best bet is to start off in either Prague (Czech Republic) or Warsaw (Poland). You can fly to either of these two cities cheaply with Easy Jet or Ryan Air.
Most travellers start their Eastern Europe InterRail ticket in Prague.
Popular Routes
From Prague, we recommend this route:
Czech Republic >> Poland >> Slovakia >> Slovenia >> Austria >> Czech Republic
If you want to include Bulgaria and Romania then look into flying home from either Sofia (Bulgaria) or Bucharest (Romania).
The Czech Republic
Despite its tender youth (it only formed as a country in 1993), the Czech Republic has a lot to offer. It’s a stunning country that has thrown off the yoke of former ties to Czechoslovakia and has forged a reputation as a tourist destination in its own right.
Prague has a buzzing backpacker scene at Český Krumlov and Telč, which is where you’ll spend most of your time sampling some of the world’s best beers. However, the beauty of Prague is echoed throughout the country, and there are some beautiful examples of gothic architecture, none more so than in Bohemia and Moravia.
The Czech Republic is a backpacker’s favourite in Eastern Europe. Check it out for yourself…
What we recommend…
We recommend that you visit the historic old town in Kraków in Poland. The old town is made up of market square and Wawel castle hill. It’s a UNESCO World Heritage Site and packed full of beauty.
It’s a gorgeous little destination. We recommend you sit at one of the many cafes sipping a coffee, watching the world go by. In the evening, you should turn the coffee into a beer, and see the old town lit up. Certainly not one to miss…
Why Eastern Europe?
Planning a trip to an Eastern European country can be a little different than planning a trip to other parts of the world. Since the break-up of the Soviet Union, there has been a lot of change in this area of Europe, and you'll find that things are still changing.
Of all the routes through Europe this is the cheapest. Austria is an architect’s dream; the Czech Republic is a favourite for weekend breaks and romantic holidays; Poland has the world’s best vodka; and Slovakia is a hidden gem, guaranteed to be a loved.
