Well, we did say close to home! Curmudgeonly folk that we are, let’s start with the down-side to skiing in Scotland: the weather can be rubbish. However, Scotland has five great little resorts: Nevis Range, Glencoe, Glenshee, The Lecht and CairnGorm Mountain. Tuition is available at all of them, along with some challenging skiing and a great nightlife.

Andorra

What it lacks in challenging terrain, weeny Andorra makes up for in general tax-free booziness... if you like that sort of thing. Its five resorts are close together (I suppose they would be) and are ideal for beginners who like to party.
