Fundraising for travelling and volunteering

Introducing fundraiser Steph Carter

Steph Carter is heading to South Africa with GAP Activity Projects - but first she needs to raise £2000. She's hoping that table top sales, jelly welly days and homeade calendars and cards are the way to do it...

Steph CarterName: Steph Carter
Age: 17 (nearly 18!)
Currently I am... a sixth form student studying geography, biology and sport studies A-levels, as well as having a part time sales assistant job at the weekend and trying to fit in as much fundraising as possible!
Amount needed: £2000

Hi there Steph - word has spread to GY Towers about your fundraising plans - what's all this fundraising in aid of then...

I will be going to a rural community in Kwazulu-natal in South Africa, where there is no eletricity or running water and everything is very very basic. I will be staying with a host family for the 6 months I am there, helping with community work but mainly at the local school by being a class room assistant. I will be helping with after school sports club, health and enviornmental lessons and just generally lending a hand wherever possible. I will be there for six months and leaving in January 2006 and I can't wait!
There was a presentation at school from GAP Activity Projects, who I decided to go with and who have helped me organise everything, from accomodation to air fare and health insurance.

Sounds an amazing and really worthwhile placement, but how much is this all going to cost and how much of it do you need to raise through fundraising?

In all, including flight, accomodation, food, spends, injections and insurance it should cost just over £2000 and I have to get it all myself! I have a part time job at the moment, but when I have finished my A-levels I plan to get a full time job to get some decent money together before I go. That means that fundraising is my main means of raising money at the moment!

So what are the fundraising plans at the minute then?

I have a table top sale planned for 17th April, where table money and refreshment money will go towards my fund. I am also having a jelly welly day, where all of my friends and I are wearing wellies with jelly in for the day, which should be fun.

As I live in Derbyshire, we have Wells Dressing which is a good time to get the tourists, so I had the idea to sell calandars with pictures of the local area on, as well as cards. This is sure to take a bit more organising and effort, but I'm sure it will be worth it! I have also written to newspapers and radio stations who have then done articles and interviews to raise awarness of my gap year and fundraising. I have also been in touch with companies, like Millets and Yoemans - as they can sponsor clothing and equpiment needed - guide association and the Duke of Edinburgh trust. The Co-op have even sponsored me!

You've got some very ambitious plans there! How much planning do you think each will involve?

Some will obviously take more time than others to prepare, such as the calandars and cards, but others like the jelly welly day are pretty easy and simple. I'm sure it's going to be fun! I think the amount of effort you put in will determine how much money you make, so I'm not bothered about working hard.

So you've got to make £2000 in total, but how much are you hoping to make from each activity?

I'm not really to sure at the moment. As I haven't done fundraising of this kind before, I am not sure how much to expect. I'm hoping to get as much as possible really!

What do you think will be the most difficult or demanding part of planning your fundraisers?

I think the hardest thing is going to be finding time, as I'm still a full time student. I have a job, am completing my gold Duke of Edinburgh award, I play in a band and so I think I will struggle to find time to do it all. Luckily I have found that most people have lots of enthusiasm and are willing to help where ever possible.

Sounds like you will need a lot of help - finally, what top 5 tips do you have for anyone planning a fundraising even for their gap year?

- Start as early as possible as time goes so fast!
- Write to any one and everyone. You'll be suprised to who will help!
- Don't be put off when poeple dont reply - they usually have their reasons.
- Get as many people involved as possible as word of mouth travels fast.
- Lastly, just have fun, if people see you having fun, they'll want to join in.
