My Trip

Paris [France] - Geneva [Switzerland] - Sion [Switzerland] - Stresa [Italy] - Venice [Italy] - Lecce [Italy] - Sorrento [Italy] - Rome [Italy] - Antibes [France]

My Top Tips:

1. Arriving in Calais, realising that people could actually understand me when I spoke French!
2. Hopping off the train spontaneously at Creil to escape some drunk English football fans and camping in an 'ordinary' French town (nearby Villers St Paul) - not touristy.
3. Beautiful walks along the Seine in Paris, watching skateboarders and bongo-players near the Eiffel Tower.
4. Staying in my uncle's remote chalet in the Alps - heated by a wood stove, with no flushing toilet - surrounded by the most amazing mountains, wildflowers, marmots (little gopher-like creatures that whistle!)
5. Just wandering the streets and bridges in Venice in the evening - beautiful.
6. Catching the night train all the way to Lecce (on the heel of Italy) and back again just to save on accommodation costs!
7. Fab campsite near the beach in Sorrento, jumping off cliffs into the sea, watching fireworks over Mount Vesuvius.
8. Pompei - eerie and fascinating. Finding an orange tree near Pompei (not sure why, but I'd always really wanted to see one! Chris climbed it and picked me an orange!)
9. Rome was amazing but a bit daunting - we didn't give ourselves enough time to see it.
10. Keep a journal and find a good book about the place you're going. I don't mean a guidebook (though you should have one of those) but a book to read for fun. I recommend the fantastic 'As I Walked Out One Midsummer Morning' by Laurie Lee if you're going to Spain, and 'Neither Here Nor There: Travels in Europe' by Bill Bryson is very funny

My Trip

Barcelona [Spain] - Milan [Italy] - Rome [Italy] - Venice [Italy] - Zagreb [Croatia] - Split - Pag Novalja - Budapest [Hungary] - Vienna [Austria] - Prague [Czech Republic]

My Top Tips

1. Make a packed lunch before boarding any journey; if you eat even half as much as me you won’t regret it, buying food on the trains is either not an option or can be costly.
2. Party in Pag (Croatia) amongst all the crazy Croatian ravers; a beach with bars and clubs along its full stretch, overlooking the ocean and Croatian hills. A 24 hour party paradise for those in search of sun kissed inebriation with no limits. A two mile road into the main town has a shuttle bus running to the beach for a small cost, if you aren’t one of the many who bring their own mode of transport.
3. Explore the passages of Venice by night; I discovered a hidden court yard with live music and dancing; there is something different and fascinating around every corner!
4. Discover Rome by foot or jump on/off tour bus; the centre is nowhere near as big as you’d expect; besides its obvious attractions, if you are there on a Sunday, don’t miss the Popes Blessing of the people over St Peter’s Square, it is usually fortnightly.
5. During the summer months in Rome there is a night market/street entertainment on the bridges across the river; smoke a hookah pipe by the river on a warm summer night.
6. Pre book your hostel one city ahead, or aim to arrive during the day, many hostels will not check you in during the early hours of the morning.
7. Open a Nationwide bank account and use this for free cash withdrawals both around Europe and the world - the small charges can soon add up if not! (the same goes for online banking, making it easier to track your expenses).
8. Be wary of reservation fees; it costs to reserve a sleeper carriage - down a few shots, inflate your travel pillow and embrace a normal over night seat.
9. Local language - even though most Europeans understand, and speak English, it will serve in your best interests to at least make a small effort to say please and thank you in the local languages. Travelmarks by a company called ‘if’ now sell through Waterstones very handy fold out phrase bookmarks for a majority of the European countries. It at least prevents you from being bogged down with tonnes of phrase books!
10. Do your research before you set off and talk to other travellers on your way. Lonely Planet can be a life saver, but very much on the tourist trail. Straying onto the beaten track can lead to some of the greatest discoveries.

If I had 4 weeks I'd suggest:

Paris - Barcelona - Rome - Venice - Zagreb (catching a cheap bus down to the island of Pag), Budapest - Vienna - Prague - Berlin

If I had 8 weeks I'd suggest:

Same as the above, except instead of going to Budapest from Zagreb, instead, catch the train down to Athens going through Bosnia and Serbia (perhaps attending the famous music festival ‘Exit Festival’ if you time it right), island hopping around the Greek Islands for a couple of weeks, before catching the train from Athens - Bucharest - Budapest - Vienna - Prague - Berlin.
