Film and TV sets

Top five film and TV sets to visit

1. Lord of the Rings: New Zealand

Hobbiton, WaikatoWhether hobbits, elves and orcs are your bag or not, few people can dispute the awe-inspiring cinematography of the recent Lord of the Rings trilogy. The spectacular landscapes of New Zealand were brought to the World's attention as the setting for Middle Earth and you can still visit many of the locations today. Stop by the rolling green hills of Waikato which was transformed into the Shire, home to the Hobbits. In and around Tongariro National Park, you'll find much of Mordor as well as Mt Doom, home of Sauron. Stop by Wellington, the capital of both New Zealand and Middle Earth to see the outer reaches of the Shire, the haven of Rivendell and the evil tower of Saruman. Go on, my precious...

There are loads of tours around Waikato, Wellington, Queenstown and Tongariro that will allow you to follow in Frodo's footsteps. Also, bear in mind that if you want to do it all; hike Mt Doom, roll around on the Hobbiton hills and pull your best Orc face in Mordor, the Kiwi Experience tours take you to all the key Lord of the Rings spots - and more.

2. Neighbours tour: Melbourne, Australia

Meet the cast at Neighbours nightMany British gappers can think of little better than sharing a pint with Harold Bishop, getting a blood pressure check from Karl Kennedy or swapping Aussie slang with Lou Carpenter. For this very reason, daily tours of the Neighbours set run where you'll get to pose with the Ramsay Street sign, snap photos of the Scully's house, drop by Erinsborough High - and get all of the Neighbours gossip too. You can then round off the experience with the world-famous Neighbours night, every Monday in Melbourne and every last Sunday of the month in Sydney. Meet members of the cast, join in the Neighbours quiz and reminisce about the wedding of Charlene and Scott with fellow fans.

You can get to Pin Oak Court in Vermont South, aka Ramsay Street using public transport or opt for a pilgrimage in a minibus courtesy of many of the backpacker hostels in the area. Otherwise, you can take the official three hour tour running daily at a cost of around £14. After all, everybody needs good Neighbours.

3. Sex and the City, Friends and The Sopranos: New York, USA

Empire State Building, New YorkWhere are so many films and TV series set in this great city, that there is no way we could name them all here. As most of them tend to concentrate on the well-known landmarks such as the Statue of Liberty, Times Square and the Empire State Building, we'll focus on the recent TV series where New York is as important as any of the leading characters - and nowhere near as well-paid. The big three being Sex and the City, Friends and The Sopranos.

There are loads of city tours that allow you shop where Carrie Bradshaw shopped, snoop around Monica and Chandler's apartment or take a peek inside Bada Bing's, the strip club where Tony Soprano and his 'family' spent many an evening. These bus tours last around three to five hours and cost between £17 and £22. The Friends and Sex and the City tours run daily, whereas The Sopranos tour (which also stops by New Jersey) only currently runs on a Saturday and Sunday.

4. Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade: Petra, Jordan

Petra, JordanIf you want to keep up the Joneses' by following in the footsteps of Indiana in the third film, Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, you'll need to head to the ancient city of Petra, Jordan. Unofficially the tenth wonder of the World, Khaznat al-Faron at Petra served as the Holy Grail's resting place. During the final scenes of the film, Indy came tearing through a narrow corridor in a mountain of rock (the Siq) and was faced with an awesome 140 foot high sandstone structure with massive pillars and a 30 foot door carved in the face of the cliff. This is the Treasury, perhaps the iconic site most associated with Jordan and this scene immortalized the symbol of Petra.

If you want to don your own fedora and whip, you can make like Harrison Ford and discover the wonder of Petra for yourself. Located 140 miles from Amman, this ancient wonder is only reachable by foot. Walk through the Siq - a narrow gorge hemmed in by cliffs of over 80 meters - and emerge in a valley surrounded by over thirty temples, many of which are over 2000 years old. The actual temple used in the film is directly opposite the narrow opening you've exited. Just be careful that the floor doesn't heave up and crack like it did in the film...

5. Star Wars: Tunisia

TatooineA long time ago in a galaxy far, far away... well actually, not that far away. In Tunisia to be precise. This land of beautiful countryside, breathtaking desert and unique architecture long captured the imagination of director George Lucas and a number of key scenes from the Star Wars films have been set in this North African country. Those that thought Planet Tatooine, the childhood home of Anakin Skywalker was the work of some special effects genius are invited to pay a visit to Tatouine in Southern Tunisia. The geography of Tunisia gives it an other-worldly appearance which made it the perfect setting for this mythical planet. In The Phantom Menace, areas of the Tunisian landscape were transformed into the Mos Espa market, the Podrace course, and the slave quarters where Anakin and his mother lived.

Key stops for anyone wishing to see some of the locations used in the Star Wars films are Matmata (home to the troglodyte cave dwellings) and Tatouine - both are in Southern Tunisia. Tunisians are rightly proud of their connection to these epic films and bus tours run to the sites daily. The Matmate site has now been converted into a hotel - Sidi Driss - and you can actually stay there if you want to spend your night underground in the complete dark with no doors on the room and no electricity.
