The Lake Superior

Lake Superior is famous for three main things, it is the largest body of freshwater in the world by surface area, it has brilliant hunting and fishing opportunities and the weather conditions can often be brutal.

Explore it by boat, kayak, canoe or by foot but remember Misshepezhieu (the local water spirit) must always be respected or disaster can and will strike.

If you are venturing out in to the wilds an experienced guide is a must - of course on board the Lake Superior you won't need to worry about wrathful spirits, bad weather or getting lost you can just sit back and relax!

Why buy this

Making three round trips per week between Sudbury and White River, the Lake Superior stops at Cartier, Chapleau, Franz and a few other places. These tiny communities are sleepy places with only the basic comforts but for you hardened outdoors lovers that won't be a problem. With several national parks and the largest crown game preserve in the western hemisphere be prepared for extreme adventure.

The Lake Superior allows outdoor enthusiasts to get off anywhere they want, even where there is no scheduled stop! How? Simply by requesting a special stop, but you need to do so in advance!

What you get in Comfort (Economy) Class:

  • Footrest
  • Headrest
  • Large picture windows

What you don't get

  • Food and drink are not included in the fares on these trains and there are no on board dining facilities so please take your own.
  • Sudbury Station is about 10km from Sudbury Junction, so if you are connecting with the "Canadian" you will need to arrange your own transfers.

How it works

  • You will be issued with a voucher, which must be exchanged at the departure station for your actual ticket.
  • Before boarding the train you must take your voucher and passport to the VIA Rail ticket office where they will issue you the ticket for your journey.
  • Please arrive at the station at least 1 hour prior to the departure of the train.
  • VIA Rail only sell the same number of tickets as there are seats on board.
  • If you do not have a reservation you will not be allowed to board unless there is space available, standing is not an option.

VIA Rail

Choose the comfort of rail and see the whole country, even the small towns. Via Rail passes mean that your trip is limited only by your imagination.
