Our travel health expert My name is Sebastiaan Kalwij. I studied medicine in Amsterdam and after graduation I worked in a Primary Care and Public Health project in El Salvador, which set off the travel bug.After this I came to London and worked in various hospital departments. In 1997 I completed a Masters degree in Control of Infectious Diseases at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine and since then I have been involved with medical projects in Zambia, India and Peru. The most interesting jobs that I've done include working for a scuba dive expedition in Belize, being a GP in Airlie Beach, Australia and working as a doctor on the Saga Rose cruise ship, which took me to places like Greenland, Spitsbergen, Zanzibar, Dublin and Tahiti. At present I live in London with my young family, which makes travelling a bit more challenging. For five years, I've worked as a General Practitioner in South London. As London has such a diverse population, I see people on a daily basis who need travel vaccinations and advice on malaria tablets. Occasionally people also bring back interesting tropical diseases that need to be investigated and treated. Hopefully for all of you reading this section of gapyear.com, this won’t be necessary in the future.
