Customs in Belize
The people of Belize are extremely socially relaxed people, especially inland away from the tourist islands of Ambergris Caye and Caye Caulker. Life in Belize is generally relaxed and slow, so it is wise to begin any social interactions with a pleasant greeting and eye contact. In rural areas of the country you will find most people enjoying casual conversations that could last for many hours. The Maya communities are a little more reserved than other parts of the country so when visiting these areas it is recommended to show a little more respect and politeness.
Tipping is not usually included in restaurant charges therefore a gratuity of 15% is typical. Other places to tip are anyone working in a service industry or someone that goes out of their way for you. Don’t forget to tip dive masters, usually anything from 10-20% or $5/tank seems appropriate.
The people of Belize are mainly Roman Catholic (approximately 49.6% of the population). Other religions include Protestant (27%), Islam, Buddhism, Hinduism, and Bahai. There is also a growing Evangelical movement together with growing Rastafarian communities.
Flowers or confectionary are acceptable gifts to give to hosts if invited to their home for a meal. Dress is generally casual; however beachwear should not be worn in towns. It is recommended to avoid discussing politics, particularly if of a partisan nature. Life is fairly relaxed in Belize so do not become impatient with the lack of punctuality, just adapt to Belizean Time.
