Food and Drink in Belize
Belize offers a selection of restaurants serving Chinese, Creole, International and Latin American food with service and quality varying; however the food is generally cheap. The main food ingredients found virtually everywhere throughout Belize is red beans, clean rice, and chicken. There is also an abundant supply of fresh fruit such as oranges, grapefruits, pineapples, papayas, bananas and plantains available at roadside markets.
National specialties include: tacos, corn or flour tortillas, with shredded chicken, onions, cabbage and cilantro (coriander); rice-and-beans or for a change, switch to beans-and-rice (where the beans are prepared and cooked separately and then served with their own gravy over rice); split peas and pigtail over rice; cow-foot soup; fry Jacks; fluffy fried crescents of dough; johnnycakes; flattened biscuits; conch fritters; Marie Sharp's hot sauces; and plantains, fried to a sweet golden brown.
National drinks include: coconut rum mixed with pineapple juice; Belikin beer; Guinness Foreign Extra Stout; Lighthouse Lager; and fresh orange, lime, watermelon or papaya juice.
The legal drinking age in Belize is 18.
