Languages in Bulgaria
Bulgarian is a southern Slavic language that is closely related to Polish, Russian and Serbo-Croatian. Modern Bulgarian is difficult to Westerners however most young Bulgarians have at least a basic knowledge of English and/or a second language of Russian, German, French or Spanish. The older generation usually have a limited or no knowledge of English at all.
Bulgaria’s country code is 359 and mobile telephone coverage is patchy to good in most of the country. Calls from some remote parts of the country must be placed through the international operator and public telephones are everywhere in the main towns. Most major hotels have Internet connection and some have Wi-Fi access. Sofia and Plovdiv have limited Internet centres, Varna has several places in the town centre and the beach resorts have some facilities.
Airmail to Western Europe takes around four days to two weeks and the Post Office in Sofia is open 24 hours. Post Office hours in other cities are generally Mon-Sat 0830-1730.
