Visas for Bulgaria

Citizens from many countries do not require a visa to enter Bulgaria for stays up to 90 days within a 6 month period. this includes all EU countries, Australia, New Zealand, USA, UK and Northern Ireland and Canada. Non-EU citizens should check with their embassy or the Bulgarian embassy regarding any special regulations, however immigration authorities may ask that you provide an address where you will be staying and the purpose of your visit. You may be required to show immigration officials that you have return or onward tickets, health/travel insurance, a travel itinerary and adequate means of support and accommodation upon entering Bulgaria.

It is a requirement under Bulgarian Law that all foreign visitors notify in writing to the local police station the address at which they will be staying within 5 days of their arrival in Bulgaria. If they are staying at a hotel or at private lodgings, the hotel management/host bears the obligation to register them at the local police station.

A passport valid for at least three months beyond length of stay is required by all nationals except EU nationals who are only required to produce evidence of their EU nationality and identity in order to be admitted to any EU member state. This evidence can take the form of a valid national passport or national identity card issued from one of the EU countries. Possession of a return ticket and sufficient funds for the length of their proposed visit is also required.

There is no departure tax payable when visiting Bulgaria. Delays are quite common at border crossings and in general custom officials are not overly friendly and are often suspicious so expect to be questioned on your reasons for entering Bulgaria and where you intend to stay.

As entry requirements may change from time to time it is strongly advised that you check with the department of foreign affairs or your local consulate or embassy for the current requirements.
