Health Advice for Cambodia
Medical services in Cambodia are fairly basic and can be very expensive. If you are to become seriously ill or injured in Cambodia, it is most likely that you require evacuation to Thailand or Singapore. As this is a costly exercise, a good insurance policy is essential if travelling to Cambodia.
While there are no vaccinations required to enter Cambodia, it is a good idea to see your doctor before visiting to ensure you are vaccinated for hepatitis A, hepatitis B, Japanese encephalitis, measles, rabies, tetanus-diptheria and typhoid. It is also important to note that Malaria and Dengue Fever are prevalent in some parts of Cambodia, particularly forest areas. It may be a good idea to speak to your doctor about anti-Malaria medication and also wear protective clothing if entering areas with a high mosquito population.
The tap water in Cambodia is not suitable for drinking. While the Phnom Penh municipality claims that its water is suitable for drinking, the chance of contamination is great so it is best use bottled water for drinking and cleaning your teeth. Ice in drinks is generally safe as it is delivered to bars and restaurants daily from ice factories.
Cambodia is slowly becoming a safer travel destination. However bag snatching is prevalent in Phnom Penh, so it is important to be careful with your possessions, particularly cash and cameras and avoid dark or remote areas at night. It is also important to note that corruption is rife in Cambodia and there is no real rule of law. Crimes may not be investigated and those involved, if wealthy or connected to government may be unquestionable. There is a high level of traffic accidents in Cambodia so it is important to exercise caution when crossing roads.
There are millions of landmines leftover from the war years, remaining throughout Cambodia. These however present little threat to tourists as they have been removed from tourist areas. The major threat is to locals in very remote areas who are concerned with agriculture. It is important however if travelling to very remote areas to exercise caution.
