Languages in Cambodia
Khmer is the language primarily spoken by Cambodians. Young people prefer to learn English over other European languages and are generally keen to practice. Most market vendors and shop keepers can speak enough English to carry out transactions, however the calculator is often used to translate prices. Some elder people speak French from the colonial days, however the Khmer Rouge targeted those fluent in foreign languages so it is uncommon to find a fluent French speaker. Some people in the tourist industry speak Japanese.
Cambodia’s calling code is +855. It is possible to pick up mobile reception in bigger cities. Internet phone calls can also be made in some internet cafes.
Internet café’s are cheap and are prominent in Siem Reap and Phnom Penh. They can also be found in Sihanoukville, Kampot and Kratie, however elsewhere can be scarce or non-existent. Computers can often be not the best with slow internet connections.
