Currency in Cambodia
The official Cambodian currency is the Cambodian riel. The exchange rate is fairly stable at 4,000 riels for 1 US dollar. US dollars are however widely accepted throughout Cambodia. There are significant ATM facilities in the major tourist areas of Phnom Penh, Sihanoukville and Siem Reap, and these dispense US dollars. It is a good idea though to take a supply of notes in smaller denominations – 1 and 5 US dollar notes come in handy.
It is also a good idea to take a supply of cash if you are heading out of the major tourist areas so as to avoid getting stuck without an ATM at hand.
Thai Baht is accepted on the eastern border of Cambodia, particularly in the areas of Battambang, Koh Kong and Poipet. If changing currency make sure your notes are not torn as these can prove hard to exchange.
