An Introduction to Denmark

Denmark is filled with historic castles and monuments, a coastline that offers broad sandy beaches, gentle fjords and small coves, and picturesque villages and towns. The country consists of low rolling hills, cool shady forests, a beautiful lake district, extensive areas of heath land and wonderful views of sand dunes and white cliffs. To add to this picture is also the 400 surrounding islands which each offer their own unique attractions. Inland from the many unspoiled beaches and islands is a landscape eminently suited to cycling.

The main part of Denmark is Jutland, a peninsula to the north, including two major ones, Zealand and Funen, which are the two main islands in Ostersoen Sea between Jutland and Sweden. Out of the 400 islands that comprise Denmark, 72 are populated. Copenhagen is Denmark’s capital and largest city which is a vibrant metropolis with world class attractions.

Denmark was once a country known for violent Vikings that were feared throughout northwest Europe, today it is a country that is peaceful, neutral, introspective and egalitarian. However Denmark has opted out of the European monetary system, the EU's Maastricht Treaty and some other issues concerning internal affairs. It is well known for its world class architecture and high standards of infrastructure which are evident in its transportation system and buildings. It is also the birthplace of Lego and the best place in the world to buy Lego bricks is at the Legoland theme park in Billund. Travellers will enjoy excellent cuisine and the people of Denmark are helpful, amiable and welcoming.
