An Introduction to Singapore

Known as one of the most enjoyable cities in Southeast Asia Singapore is a modern, affluent city combining skyscrapers and subways with an eclectic mix of Chinese, Indian and Malay influences. It has a tropical climate and offers great shopping, vibrant nightlife and tasty food. Singapore has one of the world’s best airports and after quickly experiencing just a taste of what the city has to offer you will soon realize that this city bears no comparison to crime and poverty ridden Manila or Jakarta.

Singapore has over four million people and is second to Monaco as the world’s most densely populated country. The city centre consists of Orchard Road, the Riverside and a large part of Chinatown; other areas include Little India, Balestier, Newton, Novena and Toa Payoh, North and West, East Coast and Sentosa. The city centre is known for its miles and miles of shopping while the North and West form Singapore’s residential and industrial hinterlands. Changi Airport is at the East Coast where beaches extend for miles. Sentosa is a separate island developed into a resort resembling Disneyland.

Singapore has a reputation for being sterile and squeaky clean but all you need to do is scratch a little below the surface and you will find more than meets the eye. The city is legendary for its food and shopping from busy hawker centres and 24-hour coffee shops to the meccas of Orchard Road and Suntec City there is abundance to choose from.
