An Introduction to the United States of America

The United States of America is giant and extraordinarily diverse.

It covers an area of 9.8 million sq km (about half the size of Russia and roughly the same size as China) and has the world's third largest population, after China and India, with more than 300 million people – most of them immigrants or the descendants of immigrants.

It boasts the world’s largest economy and is by far the biggest military power – and the products of its entertainment and media industries are globally dominant.

There is something in the US for everyone – buzzing cities, wide-open spaces, every kind of beach, endless opportunities for adventure.

Lots of people think they know it because of the ubiquity of American TV and film – and the way US politics are reported globally. But in fact it’s full of surprises. The main difficulty with putting these pages together has been what to leave out.

It's easy to get to from anywhere else in the world, and easy to get around by road, air and (in some places) train.
